Steering Wheel Boss

As some of you know i aquired a Club Sport wheel from a fellow member that came of his 83 Targa, the boss does not fit as the 964 spline is smaller,

I just need to check I have done the right thing, I striped the club sport steering wheel down as i presumed that I just attach the wheel alone to a new boss.

When unscrewing I was not aware that it was sprung loaded[&:] the washers screws nearly took my teeth ot[:mad:] my fault I should have checked.

So all the bits are in a jiffy bag.

Please tell me I only need the wheel (No other bits) as I am not sure how to get the 83 kit back together doh!!! lol[:D]

I am struggling to get a boss no one seems to have one[:eek:] at the moment,

i just got a momo one for my 77 £38! inc postage from LK performance look them up on net as not got the number here

Indeed it is spring loaded and yes you have to put it all back together if you want the horn to work!

Now you have it is apart and once you have the new boss (mine was in stock at Porscheshop btw) the procedure is:

1. Make sure the front wheels are straight
2. Remove old wheel (and old bose) and remove the big nut and washer (probably best to mark the nut first before undoing).
3. Fit new boss onto spline making sure two of the bolt holes on the boss are horizontal (I think this is the correct orientation).
4. Fit washer and nut and tighten to original position.
5. Feed on the boss's rubber gaiter.
6. Attach the new wheel to the boss (3 allen bolts)
7. Attach the two wires that are on the boss to the spade connectors on the horn button.
8. Put on the big spring, compress it and secure it using the 3 silver screws and plastic washers.
9. Clip on the horn pad.
10. At point 6 above you might need to take the boss off again and move it one or two splines, right or left as appropriate.

Thanks for the step by step instructions, I have order the kit from design 911 lets hope I can pit it back together gulp[:eek:].

PS if anyone has a PDF or something of which washer etc goes 1st 2nd when fitting the wheel togther I would be gratefull[&:]

Steve & to all the others who helped in the earlier thread, many thanks she is fitted & looks to dogs BoXXXXKS.

What a difference it makes the car a hell of a lot easier to drive and being 6.1ft my left leg is not hitting the S-wheel plus the grip of the club sport is a hell of a lot better than the standard wheel[:)][:)]

Top improvement got to be done[8D][8D]

No I got the wheel off my Dad before he sold his 944.
The boss came off ebay from a guy who said it was off his 964.

There are many maufacturers of after market boss kits. If you know the make of the boss you could check their website to check if it is compatable, there is normally a part number stamped on them.
What make of steering wheel are you trying to fit?

The boss for the RS wheel (I think you mean clubsport if it's the same as mine - see below) is specific i.e. it has to be a 964 boss for a clubsport wheel. You can get a momo boss for a 964 but it won't work with a clubsport wheel. Might be worth checking the make of the boss.

Saying all that, there IS some fine adjustment on the stalk assembly allowing you to move it to and from the boss. Unfortunately it has been some time since I fitted mine so I can't be more specific.

Hi Steve

this is the sterring wheel I have fitted. It fits the boss ok and onto the steering column ok.

Like i said it just doesnt disarm the indicators.

Therefore i think i'll check out the stalk adjustment to see if that has any effect.

Also to get the horn working i had to lift the copper strip so the adjustment might also allow me to lower the copper strip.

Any ideas about where the adjustment is or how to adjust it.

Lee, yes if you had to bend out the copper strip it means that the indicator assembly is too near the dash. Remove the plastic cowlings from the mechanism (about 4 screws) and you'll see how the mechanism is clamped to the steering column. Just loosen if off and pull towards you and re-tighten.
 
Just found a pic of the stalk assembly - you can see the clamp on the back which is used to adjust its position on the steering column.
