Steering wheel movement

I have begun to notice some vertical travel in the steering wheel or rather steering column. When holding the wheel it can be moved 5-8 mms upwards and 'knocks', with the internal steering column moving with it as well. I wondered if there any bushes or sleeves holding the column steady at all? Any thoughts or insights would be welcomed. It does not affect the steering of the car, but is niggling as I have not encountered this kind of wobble in any steering in my other current or previous cars.

Hi Mark - I'm new to 911 ownership but I seem to remember reading in 911 & PW some time ago about a bush being available for the top of the steering column which may be what you are looking for - but, of course, may not! I cannot for sure recall who was selling this part but I think it might have been either Design 911 or Type 911. Might be worth a look at their web sites.

there are two ways I know that deals with this, one you can buy a sleeve insert that you press into the bearing race at the top of the column, this removes the slack, or buy a new bearing and press over the top of the existing one, there is enough room. Both costs about the same and both work.
 
Might be worth checking that the white plastic bearing sleeve is still in place. This was the issue with my sons car someone may have mislaid this when changing the wheel in the past. Got ours from local OPC was not expensive. Take a look on Pelican Parts website if you do not have an exploded view of column in workshop manual. You can download the picture with part number to get correct spacer

best to remove and refit a new bearing assembly. I remember a while back a chap who had a similar problem with the bearing but it started to break up and would interfere with the movement of the steering wheel on occasions. Not a very pleasant experience.
 
Thanks for the additional info. Always best to avoid unpleasant experiences, especially when the steering wheel is attached to a cherished vehicle that also carries the cherished family on occasions!

Mark, have you managed to investigate any further? I've just logged on to look into exactly the same problem on my car!! I was enjoying a rapid drive over the North Yorkshire Moors on Sunday morning when I became aware of movement in the steering wheel and a slight knock / rattle when going over bumps. I remember this being discussed a long time ago somewhere and also vaugely something about a sleeve that could be replaced.

The new bearing is cheap from Porsche, just gently tap it in over the old one. To strip it out is a huge job and you should be able to get most of the old one out if it is falling apart. What's left won't cause any problems.
 
Just as an update, I purchased one of the replacement sleeves in the end and fitted this. Okay I had to purchase a socket set with 27mm socket to get the steering wheel off, but otherwise was quite straight forward - it took more time to get the 'c' ring off than anything else. 'Good' advice to look on Pelican parts for a suitable method and instruction was 'great' advice. Thanks to you all. I can now drive to the festival on Sunday with wobble-free steering.

I had exactly the same problem on my car!! I had it replaced today and wow what a difference it make. This is a common fault on SC's and Carrera's, especially when the cars start getting 20+ years old. They normal fail due to age ..but they can fail because people lean on the wheel when getting in and out of the car and this can accelerate the process.
