Steering Wheel Play

My steering wheel has been making a slight clunk on acceleration after braking. After further examination today I have noticed that if you push fairly hard on the steering wheel it clunks inward a couple of mm (this is obviously what's happening under braking). It pops back out if you pull it (or drive off).

Any suggestions as to what could be wrong or where I should look? All I have checked so far is steering wheel to shaft which is secured tightly!

Cheers

Stuart

Hi

there is a bearing under the indicator / wiper stalks which can wear. There is a plastic collar here that must be in the right place too, mine was looking damaged but was fine once I repositioned it.

I'd check the bolts holding the u/js on to the column and the rack and also the rack to the crossmember

Hope these ideas help

Mike

I've read someone else who had a problem with that bearing under the stalks, the damage in his case was caused by using the steering wheel to get out of the car, IIRC.

It would appear that said bearing is causing the problem. Everything else looks fine. It was an old man who had my car before me , quite possibly the wheel has been used as a mount/dismount aid!

This also ties in with my steering wheel making a rubbing noise when turning when I got it the car which I only just removed with grease/WD40! Must have been the bearing in some state of collapse!

I take it this bearing can be bought and I don't need a whole new shaft?

Yeah, first thing I tried. Pretty sure it's the bearing now. It is 24mm, fortunately I had a 24mm socket!
