Steering Wheel Removal

I have a problem with the steering wheel contact ring on my 993 C4 - airbag light is on and the horn stopped functioning. I was thinking I'd check it out this weekend but there seems to be conflicting information about the 'risks' of removing the airbag unit (prior to removing the airbag). Some other sites say disconnect the battery, some also say leave it for at least 30 mins after disconnection, whereas others say if the ignition's not on there is no problem.

Anybody here had any experience of removing the airbag (prior to removing the steering wheel)?

Also the various instructions, concerning tools, seem to say Torx T30 bit (at least 2" long) for the airbag screws (rear of the steering wheel), M24 hex socket for the main steering wheel nut and Torx T25 bit for the contact ring. Does this match with anybody's experience?

Thanks in advance for any help/advice.

Regards
Anton

I have had to remove my steering wheel 2/3 times over the years. I have always disconnected the battery and waited 30 minutes just in case.

There is a procedure at the end of the Rack Replacement instructions here which details the tools req'd:-
