Steering Wheel Shake

Hi, I wonder if anyone on here can help me. I have a 2005 987 Boxster. Last week I took it in to my local OPC for a wheel refurbishment and four new tyres. Everything was ok with the car when I dropped it off. When I received the car back with the work done I drove it home and noticed that when you reached around 60mph the steering wheel started to shake. I immediately took it back to the OPC for further investigation. I assumed the wheels were not balanced properly. However they checked the wheels and said everything was ok. I was told to drive it for a while and it should dissapear once the tyres wear a little. However the problem still exists. The car is going back in today for further investigation. Does anyone on here have any ideas what could be wrong?

Were the wheels completely refurbished, inside and out? If so there could be some paint on the clamping face to the hub which might cause a wheel to run out slightly. If not then the problem could be related to a tyre not seating properly on the rim. I'd ask your PC to take all the tyres off the rims, rotate them say 90 degrees and replace them.

Thanks for the reply. The wheels were totally refinished inside and out so I will mention your suggestions when I take the car in today. Thanks again.
 
Does it 'drive through' the shake?
Sounds as if they have't balaned them correctly after refitting the tyres.

Had this once on a 996 got the wheels refurbished and they put to much paint on the back face where it touches the hub and the paint was preventing the wheel from being completely tight to the face ..have you checked if all the wheel nuts are tight .
 
Had a similar problem when I had a Ferrari 308 GTS it was fine when I took it in for new tyres. Drove out of the garage and as soon as I hit 65mph on the motorway vibration occurred through the steering wheel.
I went back to the garage 3 times till eventually they balanced the wheels correctly.

this, paint on hub face I would say when it should be bare Alloy.
 
Hi,

I was never happy with the handling on my 987 at speeds on the motorway,vibrations seem to be worse after wheel refurb and rear shocks fitted,so I held my breath and visited my local Kwik fit for Hunter wheel alignment and all wheels balanced,after that no vibrations and car handling was super sorted best 90 notes I spent.

They just need a bit of supervising to make sure they don't air gun ya wheels to death and remove the old weights with care..lol
 
Hi all,

Thanks for all your help. When it went back in today they checked the wheel balance once again and found it to be ok. The car has spacers on. Hub centric on the rear and shims on the front. It turned out that they did not alligin the front spacers correctly. This was causing the front wheels to bounce up and down creating the vibration through the steering wheel. There are not many opportunites to get the car up to speed on the way home but when I did it seemed fine. So hopefully this has solved the problem.
