Steering wheel too low

shad

New member
Hi
Just got a 924S and everything seems fine. However, the steering wheel seems unusually low and turning the wheel becomes a slight problem when the hands knock against the legs. I am just 5 feet 10 so can't be my height. Is it possible to get a smaller steering wheel or raise the height of the steering if that is at all possible?
Any helpful hints greatly appreciated.
Cheers

Hi Shad, me again!

You might find the seat still has spacers underneath it (not sure where exactly, I presume between the runners and the floor or the runners and the seat). They're about 10mm thick I think, and a lot of people remove them. Maybe yours are still there.

Is it a standard wheel? If it's not (Momo or something else maybe?) I have a spacer about 20-25mm thick that you could try. It will move the wheel nearer to you, might give enough clearance??

Hi Phil
Many thanks for your tip. Although it has a wooden steering wheel (not sure about momo), I also have the original which I will be replacing. I will have a look at the spacers under the seat (what do they look like? rings presumably) and see if it makes a difference.

Hi Shad

On mine they were aluminium blocks about 25mm x 10mm x 10mm and were fitted between the seat runners and the floor pan. Easy to take out but tricky to replace the bolts as it is easy to cross thread them.

If the wheel you have is the typical one that has a ring of 6 bolts to attach it to an adaptor then my spacer will fit (albeit with longer bolts) and 'may' help.

If you're going over to a standard wheel anyway it won't.

I'd think favourite problem is that you've still got spacers under your seat though, because I'm about 5'-11" and never had problems with the steering wheel. I know mine didn't have spacers because I changed the seats over so would have seen them.

The original steering wheel isn't round whereas the replacement one probably is.
Place the original one on top of the other and you should see a diffference. Tip - if you use the original wheel then make sure the road wheels are pointing straight ahead, this then gives you a bit more room to get in /out of the car.
Cheers,

Well I never knew that! Having said that, I replaced my original wheel and still had no problems, so I'm pretty sure your problem is seat spacers.

Thanks for the tips Phil, Trevor and Fred
I am putting back the original steering and just waiting for the Easter break to get cracking.
I'll let you know how its turned out.

Hi Phil
Have been indisposed with a bad bout of flu, completely washed out feeling, so did not get around to doing it yet.
Having trouble getting the spacers for the original 924S.
Will keep on trying
