STEERING WHEEL VIBRATION

I have been suffering from major vibration through the steering wheel when braking from say 60mph. I thought it might be the discs but having taken it in I was told it was the tracking rods and nothing to do with brakes. I have just picked up the car having had new rods fitted and re-setting wheel alignment and its doing exactly the same.
Very frustrating!
Any idea what this could be as it appears I have just wasted nearly £500!
Thanks

Have you seen Nick Fearn's thread?: http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=788847

thanks Mark, not sure the same applies.
I am now told it is the shocks that need replacing so it appears it wasnt the track rods. The problem only occurs when I brake from 50/60mph but not below.
I am told its not the discs or pads

I had the same symptoms and new suspension arm bushes fixed it. I assume you have had meaningful negotiations with the garage that mis diagnosed and charged you £500 !!!

I had this problem some years ago and took me a long time to sort it.

It was the front brake calliper backing plates lifting with corrosion. As soon as I replaced them it stopped and has never returned.

Worth investigating

I am with Mr Maddox on this as a primary option

Mmhhh! I am told this is part of the problem as well as the shocks!!

I kept getting this as well, tried rebalancing the wheels (twice) new discs, calliper rebuild, lots of poking around the suspension, etc. In the end it was cured when the tires were replaced, even though they had legal tread and performed well on the balancer the carcases were simply shot, which got worse as they warmed. It was a frustrating time.

Hmmm, do you know how old they were? and can you say how the car is stored usually, during the lifetime of these tyres? Thanks

Sorry I do not know, the tyres came on the vehicle 6 months before, I was prompted to change the pair after an unrepairable puncture and surprised to find my vibration had gone! I know the previous owner covered only a couple of thousand miles per year so possibly they may have been reasonably aged and flatspotted?

Possibly something else worth looking at is the faces between the wheel and hub; neither should be painted, but with maybe a very thin film of aluminium paste to prevent corrosion.
