Steering Wheels

I am recovering the dash and centre console over the winter and refreshing the interior trim. Whilst I like the nostalgic look and feel of the lozenge wheel maybe it is time for a change. Was looking for recommendations really. Firstly what size do you guys think is good for a fast road use car? Secondly what brand? Obviously a Momo or something would be nice but to be honest I have seen some really ropey ones going for stupid money. Anyone know of any products out there that are good, look the part but don't necessarily cost the earth? Don't mind paying good money for a good product but just don't want to most silly money. All help appreciated.

Hi Rob,

i had the same thought feed years ago now and I went for this model which I found a guy selling on eBay at the time and it was perfect for what I was after. It’s tiny compared to the standard and was very weird at first , but after about 10 minutes I fell in love with the feel of it being so much smaller and just the racy feel it now has along with it looking to me very classy ( I’m one to be a bit different so I got the Porsche crest center horn button and I also fitted a quick release momo hub so I take the steering wheel with me everytime I get out the car, which gives me the extra security.

i can’t remember now how much the steering wheel was but it’s ietger £70 or £120? And I don’t recall the make as I think it’s a momo copy which I wouldnt ever change for anything else.

i was going to get the clubsport steering wheel all along but the price always put me off , so when I found this I took a punt and it was one of the best investments on my turbo I’ve ever made, feels awesome to drive with this as every bend takes less movement.

My metropole blue interior was so relentlessly blue (steering wheel, dash, console, armrest, gear lever) from the 80s fashion to colour code everything! To tone it down I had the gear lever and armrest re done in black, then got a Momo Monte Carlo wheel. Not sure what diameter (it's cold outside) but they come 320 or 350mm.

It looks good, I think, is well made but slightly smaller than standard. Car drives OK with it. Only problem is I'm tall and can't see the top of the speedo too well...nothing to worry about! Got it from Pelican in the US...at the time, even with shipping and taxes it worked out cheaper than buying in the UK. Exchange rate maybe not so good now?

That's exactly what kind of wheel I was thinking Dan. Is it leather or polyurethane? Is that the make then "ietger" or some kind of autospell thing lol.

Hi rob,

sorry mate that that was a bloody typo 😆 not sure the make it if it even has one but I assume it was a momo copy?

its not leather it’s a type of plastic/polyurethane of some sort. Very thick and nice quality. I love it and also love the chrome rings. It did come with its own center hooter ect but I was always gonna try and get a porsche crest centre hooter and found everything on Ebay with a little bit of modifying for the porsche crested centre to fit it was all straight forward.

all I would recommend is have a look on Ebay just type in porsche steering wheel and see what comes up , if not just put in sports steering wheels.

obviously it’s only if your model has air bag in the wheel you may have a problem? But mine didn’t so it was a simple task

hope thats helped

Hi Rob, Tom has a custom one in his red car I didn't like it much (a bit blingy) but must admit it felt ok.

He also has the black 944 in his garage in Peterbro , with an OMP wheel in it, that' is good for not too much money.

I've always been a big fan of the clubsport one over the lozenge and I was very fortunate to come across a lightly used burgundy one, to match my interior, for a very reasonable price a few years back. In fact ludicrously lucky if I'm honest! The after market ones are all down to personal preference. One mans delight is another's dogs dinner! Suit yourself is the best advice I can give!

Cheers

I did the same but fitted a lozenge steering wheel in black. Just provides a bit of relief from the sea of blue. Wall to wall colour coded interiors are a bit of a Porsche trait and some of them are horrendous. There is one used in 996 era called Savannah i think and it makes the interior look like the inside of a babies nappy.

Ah yes...nappy brown. A friend who's a trimmer did a complete retrim for a celeb who'd bought an immaculate black 993 with nappy interior. All done in black leather including the correct perforated seat facings. A lovely job.

Sorry Gerry who is the Tom you are referring to? Are you suggesting that he has an OMP wheel for sale? I work in Peterborough.

I have a club sport wheel in mine. i think it's the best wheel you can fit to a 44. I like Stuart was very lucky to get it a few years ago before the prices went daft.

My son Tommy86 he works in Perkins, Red 944S2 road car black 944S2 race car.

I thought you had contact details, no neither wheel is for sale, but you could have a look at the wheels in situ give you ideas on size etc.

I really like the lozenge - for me the clubsport wheel is too chunky.

Momo suede wheels (model 78) are nice but not great on a daily driver.. I see you can get it in leather. Momo Tuner wheel looks similar. Both expensive though.
