Steering

hello all

Just a quick query to ask if it were possible to lighten the feel of the power stering on the 944?

I know I'm probably opening myself up here for critizicim but I just wish my steering was a little lighter thats all. My tyres are fine so I was just wondering if some power steering pump mod could be done.

anyone with experience or thoughts?

many thanks
Paul

I've never found the power steering to be anything other than nicely weighted, so it might be worth getting it checked over to make sure it's the same as other 944's first. These cars are extremely sensitive to alignment, so worth checking that and if your tyres are low on tread it's amazing how much difference that can make. Lastly check that the belt isn't slipping, which is quite common in my experience.

I have had 2 944's now and whilst new tyres does make a big difference, I still always felt as though the steering was a little heavy for my preference even if that makes me a big nancy boy.

I guess there are no obvious mods been done before now then?

The only mod I have ever heard is to actually remove the power steering rack and fit the manual version. This is obviously even heavier so not for you but it is supposed to give a wonderful sense of feedback on the move. Modern cars are so grossly over assisted it's often difficult to work out where the wheels are pointing, but you can twirl the wheel with your finger while parking. Making the change to our system takes some getting used to but I find it perfect

When they're checking the alignment, you could ask them to reduce the Caster. I prefer a lot of it (3 degrees plus) for handling benefits, but it does make the steering heavier (and gives more feedback through it, which on Britain's roads does feel sometimes as if the car is fighting you. In facts it's only telling you that the road is only fit for a Cayenne..)

what wheels / tyres do you have on the front? - just wondering if you have wider than std & whether that is making a difference?
