Stereo advice

Could anyone advise from experience what is the best way to upgrade the sound system in my boxster (3.2S 2003). It currently only has the two dash mounted speakers which although acceptable at low speed struggle against wind and engine noise (glorious though they are!) at higher speeds.
I was planning to go to an independent for a pair of speakers in the doors but i think i read recently that it is hard to get a decent bass output this way. Dont get me wrong, i dont need window shattering noise but the 8 speaker system in our golf t embarreses the boxster. I dont really want a sub visible in the car either, in notts it would be gone before you know it!!
Cheers all in advance

Your current dash speakers are powered direct from the head unit - they are cheapest of the cheap paper cone Nokia units, 4" single cone.

You could replace them fairly easily with a set of MB Quart components (4" mid/bass and 1" tweeters) but you'd need to fabricate a MDF mounting plate, or recover the plastic one from the current speakers and mod it slightly. You are not going to get much more bass, but will get a better quality sound.

The fact that you don't have the factory amp and the MOST bus fibre optic connections could bea bonus - you may be able yo use the pre-outs on the CDR24 head unit to a separate amp in the front boot - this will give you a bit more umpf but the limiting factor is the size of the speakers in the dash top.
