Stereo power problems '82 Lux

I fitted a Sony minidisc player yesterday - works fine at low volume but blew a fuse in the +12v battery (not +12v ignition) when the volume was turned up about half way. I replaced the fuse with a brand new one and tried it again but although it now doesn't blow it's fuse, the MD shuts down and 'reboots' when the volume is turned up.

The player is quite modern, probably around 2001, and it has been in my last three cars which were all fairly modern cars too. I have read that the original 944s had alternators that didn't provide all that much power. Could this be the cause of the problem? I am a MD fanatic and would like to keep it in the car, so if this is a problem due to the cars age I am thinking maybe a capacitor might help? I am not intending to fit an amplifier, just run the MD player with four speakers. Thanks
Chris

I have a similar problem with a 2 year old sony cd/mp3 - doesnt blow the fuse but does reboot itself when volume turned up.It reboots at various volume settings and actual loudness - not actually a problem for me unless daughters are with me!
If you find an answer let me know.
Mike

Cheers for that - mine does it at a specific level and it does it a higher volume if I turn the bass down - I have refitted the unit into the Ulysse to make sure it hasn't suddenly become faulty and it works fine in that. I have a MD changer I would actually like to fit too, so I will see if I can get a capacitor from somewhere to see if it makes a difference and I'll let you know. Chris

Is it worth running a new wire directory to the battery (fused of course)? That is if you haven't done so already.

Could it be that the -ve for the speakers is connected to ground at some point as most modern car stereo's don't like that.

For anyone interested in this I have found the cure. The four speakers have been replaced with replacements from Halfords...thats it!

The speakers I have taken out were in a right state. Rusted and corroded, the front passenger door 4x6 wasn't even working properly. Now I can turn the Minidisc player up as loud as I want and the thunderous racket doesn't even make the lights on the fascia dim.

I was going to suggest that it sounds like a HU earthing fault, which requires a new earth wiring in. One of the Lower Dash bolts would do fine in such a case.
