Stereo Upgrade in MY NEW 993 WOOHOO

Hi All,

Now that I have finally purchased my new toy (993 Midnight Blue Savannah interior-lovely[:)] ) I wish to upgrade the stereo from the fitted Blaupunkt unit to an Alpine is this straight forward? Do I need to disconnect any amplifiers for the speakers like in my 944 also will I need an ISO plug or will one be already fitted to the car (L Reg 1994)? The reason I ask is that I wish to save the £50.00 fitting fee by doing it myself so any advice would be great.

Regards

Pete

WOOHOO!

Congratulations. Nice colour, a C2 and a manual as well. Perfect. If you see another Midnight Blue 993 in Hertfordshire it could well be me as I work in the area regularly.

Ian.

PS I know naff all about stereos in cars so can't help you out.

good job....

with Alpine there is only 1 choice, the INA-N333 RRS (not the RR but the RRS)

Congratulations on the new car. I live in the outskirts of London - South Hertfordshire and look forwards to seeing the new car. Many happy miles.

Do yourself a favour; find a really reputable ICE installer and pay the £50 - if they make a mistake then they have to put it right - saves you the worry. Of course, if you feel confident then go ahead.

Good luck - do let us know how you get on.

It is staright forward, but you will never know what to expect as other owners will have been fiddling there before you. If you have a wiring diagram it is very easy.

Hi Pete

Nice choice with Alpine and if you're looking for a navigation unit, Sundeep's suggestion is bang on. They pioneered the in-car navigation concept and you can't do much better.

Swapping units is relatively straight forward. You will have, (or should have unless people have been playing in the past[]), two male ISO standard connectors. Word of warning here - you will find a black cable linking from the back of the ISO's to the aerial lead. This, in case you don't know, is for the aerial amplifier. If it isn't connected, you won't get good reception, or indeed any at all.

As far as I can say, unless people have uprated before you there won't be any amplifiers to worry about. It's a simple case of one out one in. Alpine's generally come with a lead that has a plug for the unit at one end and ISO females on the other, so just match the males to the females. You won't get them the wrong way round, because you will see the release clips are in two different positions and they will only go together the correct way. Depending on model, they might have been kind and given you a live tail off this lead as well - very handy if you're fitting a phone kit or similar.

If you have any questions or run into any problems, feel free to ask. Might as well save yourself the fifty - it could go towards Sundeep's other worthwhile suggestion of a strut-brace!!!

Welcome to ownership of one of the best Porsche ever made!!!

Regards

Hi Oliver,

Thanks for the info hopefully as the last owner was Lord somebody or other!! there will of been no playing around with wires unless he was a DIY lord[:D] The unit appears to be factory fit so I will have ago myself

Will let you no how things go

Thanks

Pete

Hi am I right in thinking you bought your new car from Paul Stephens - the colour and interior made me think this and then I saw the reference to a Lord being a previous owner. If this is the car, I think he was the first owner and a former colleague of mine was the next owner and sold the car on to Paul Stephens. I can give you a bit of info about it if you like. I remember it was a very nice colour combination

Just upgraded to a kenwood head unit which sounds (and looks) great plus an ipod adapter which sits in the glove box. I do have one question ...does anyone know where the original amplifier for cars with the HI FI option is located ?(and what it looks like?) as I am contemplating replacing it. It does a c[][][]p job when competing with the flat six on the motorway!

Hi,

I was just wondering what the code is for the HI FI option? mine has the Blaupunkt Bremen RCM 43 already fitted is this standard for a 1994 car??

Pete, Congratulations on the purchase. I hope the car is living up to expectations.

Re the head unit, I have the Alpine INA-N333 RRS. It is run through an amplifier and so if you don't have one, I can't really commet on how it might sound in your car. The 45W amp they quote comes out at about 17RMS, so make sure your speakers are matched to this.

What I will say is that the Sat Nav function is excellent - no "please do a U-Turn" comments and it is very quick to re route. The TMC is the Dog's B's. It has taken me around traffic jams and slow moving traffic, and onto to roads around the M25 that I didn't even know about which, on first thoughts, seemed to be a bizarre route.

It does have it's moments though - in the countryside it can take you down some bizarre single track roads, so sticking to the "quick" option rather than the "shortest" route in probably best. 4 digit post code search is also a shame, but only a problem when finding business premises / very strange addreses.

Maybe see you around Herts!
