Sticking door pull

My driver's door outside handle (the bit you pull with your figure to open the door) has dried out over the winter. Feels like it needs a bit of grease or oil on it.

Can I get at what I need to oil from the outside or do I need to remove the door card inside. I wonder if a spray of WD40 might sort it from the outside.

Any advice?
Thanks
Mark

Hi Mark,

You can probably free the door pull temporarily with WD40 but will need a better lubricant for it to last. WD40 is a water displacer but not a good long term lubricant.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"] When the better weather arrives it may be worth taking the door card off and removing the handle (2X10mm hex head bolts) cleaning the latch up before lubricating and replacement.

Get some of the rubber gaskets that go between the door and handle before you start as they are not expensive and do perish.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

Thanks John - sounds like a good plan. It's about time I took the door cards off - I need to refix the sound deadening material inside the passenger door too.

Just done exactly the same job on both my door locks - gave the whole mechanism a good flush through before lubricating with a PTFE spray grease. It's amazing how much muck gets in there! Good as new now and so smooth!

A good alternative to WD40 is GT85 - it's similar in operation to WD40 but leave behind a light grease

As said though, it's not hard to remove the door handle and give it a good lube [;)]

What sound deadening material ?  I don't think mine has any.

When I close my passenger door, about 0.5 second later I hear a noise like a piece of wood hitting a sheet of metal. Apparently a "known fault" that the sound deadening material stuck to the inside of the outer door sheet has come lose and tips about.

I've not looked inside so I don't know if it's true.

That sounds like the famous noise we get on 964s from the mechanical flapper valves at the rear of the cabin (part of the HVAC system). Perfectly normal and shows they are working. My guess is that you should get the same noise on a 993?

Mine used to rattle in the bottom of the door and sounded hollow when shut. It had crumbled in to small pieces. The New OEM part wasn't that expensive and it was magnetic, (Porsche Reading didn't know it was Magnetic) so you just slide it in and it sticks. I did seal round the edges with glue too. Door sounds like it should now when closed.

hello, the door handle mechanism is a simple lever with a small rod. This rod pushes a plate where the plate is a part of the locking mechanism.
the only place to lube from the outside is the handle lever you pull to open door, wd40 is good enough.
As for sound deadening, there is none.
Under the door card, there is a factory transparent sticker that englobes all the inner side of the door. It is there for water not for sound.
In 1997, porsche added a small 5cms x 5cms black sponge behind the inner door handle, because clients were complaining of blowing air coming through the handle. There is a factory TSB on that for model years before 1997, regards

Not so.

My 97 has the pads mentioned under the door pulls, but also has sound deadening mats on the inside of the door skins. These have almost certainly been there since new, and are beginning to peel off and crack up.

Now I know what you mean. There are thin sheets of material stuck inside the door to the outer metal - it's a while since I've been in there, so my memory was a bit rusty. I wouldn't have thought it did much sound deadening, but there you go.

Aha! Now I know why I get cold air blowing straight through the handle. I'd always thought a door liner was missing. Something else to look at doing...

Cheers/John
