Sticking throttle

I seem to be having a problem with my throttle sticking. It happens mainly when changing gear when there is little stress on the engine, the engine sometimes revs high when engaging the clutch to change gear after accelerating.

Strangley when I pop the bonnet and watch the throttle assembly whilst pushing the accelerator pedal I cant get it to stick or do anything that would show a mechanical fault. The accelerator pedal does not appear stuck either and the car hasnt been jacked up recently.

Could this be related to a sensor? I've been having some problems recently regarding intermitant starting, could they be related?

Any light on the matter would be helpful, sometimes it can be quite dissconcerting..

Id guess that it is caused by the engine moving laterally (actually trying to rotate -think Newtons third law). This will only happen when youre driving.
 
If you're sure te footwell is not slightly deformed then there have also been cases of 'sticky throttle syndrome' caused by the cable itself catching as it travels through the bulkhead in the footwell. Have a good look to see if any carpet, or sound deadening is frayed/ damaged and catching on the cable
 
I cant see it sticking at all when moving the throttle or pedal, makes me think its perhaps more to do with the injectors or electronic throttle control? When in neutral and just reving the engine it doesnt stick at all, however when driving it does, especially when changing gear, the revs get 'stuck' at about 2000-3500rpm, change gear, the revs go up, release the clutch and it accelerates all by its self...doesnt always do it, but every other change or so, and seems to increase the harder you accelerate.

Sounds like a classic case of deformed floor pan as Paul has suggested. Someone in the past has used the nobbles behind the front wheel arches to jack the car up. These are not jacking points and the floor panel will bend. Try getting a block of hard-wood, placing it on the floor pan above where the nobbles are and use a lump hammer to gently tease the floorpan back into shape.
 
I had the same problem with my S2 and it ended up been the actual throttle pedal was deformed on the slide , so changed the pedal and problem was resolved , but my one sort of stuck on full throttle till I flicked it back with my toe or turned the engine off .Was very scary when it first happened , I dipped the clutch and the engine was reving hitting the rev limiter until I turned the key off . I do believe the floor jacking theory to be true as well , makes the throttle pedal be offset , hit the floor pan with a 3x2 near the base of the pedal , might sort the problem , best of luck.
 
It could also be the idle control valve sticking due to gumming up. Mine does it occasionally. Its a bit of a pain to get to so im told but simply spraying some carb cleaner into it might help.
 
Thanks for the comments guys, looks like it may be the floor pan being distorted or perhaps the idle control. Its booked in with RPM on Monday for re-tensioning the drive belts so hopefully they will sort it out.

Ok I have a confession... Seems I've found what the problem is, was... It was my foot...[:-] I know, I know... I was putting my foot too close to the pedal and not allowing it to rise when deaccelerating... [:D]Just drove it with foot in different position and it was fine...Well it never happened with my previous car! At least its not expensive!

now feeling rather sheepish...[:)]

It can be a relief can't it - I was worried recently because my sun roof started to leak. Took it out, cleaned the drains, greased the seals etc. Then discovered I just hadn't closed it properly! All fine now [&:]...
