Sticky brakes - cooling problem?

After watching a snippet of Tiff giving some basics on track driving yesterday on FifthGear (I only watched it to see what the new S3 was like) "" he mentioned that after you have been using your brakes a lot you shouldn't apply the handbrake or they will stick. You should just leave the car in gear and turn off the engine for everything to cool down.

So I'm thinking, after a "˜vigorous' 30 mins drive home along some windy public back roads "" should I not apply the handbrake and just leave the car in gear in the garage overnight?!

I do often have the brakes stick to the wheels the next mornings, but I always thought that was due to wet conditions.

Your thoughts?
 
Road use is not likely to be such a problem, it is more of an issue if you have been horsing around on the track, when you finish a session it is good practice to minimise use of the brakes, or at least don't stop the car and when parked sit with your foot on the brakes.

The objective is to let everything cool down naturally, so you get the best out of the pads and discs.

I've never had issues with the handbrake I must admit.

I often had sticking breaks on my 996's as you described. Leaving it in gear and not using the handbreak resolved it for me. I've not (yet) had a similar issue with my 997.

Well I have found that the 997 is no different to my 996 in the sticky brake situation.
My car was left for about a week and upon the first moving of the car the brakes did the usual thunk as they released themselves from the light rusting.
I was tempted to spec PCCB to cure the rusting and sticking brakes, but thought it a slight overkill for such a insignificant problem (for now) [:D]

Have to agree, mine always thunk whether left over night or for two weeks. One thing I always do is take the car out for a quick blast after washing it, as the 996 and Boxster really suffered with corroding discs if you just stuck it in the garage clean.

I don't know if the 996 turbo had the problem ? 997 S has 996 turbo brakes I think (330mm all-round ?) so I don't know if this is still an issue, as it's a bit daft washing, then driving round the block in this weather... Not brave enough just to leave it and find out though.
 
Pad material sticking to your discs is what gives credence to the 'warped disc'old wives tale.

Always good practice to avoid parking up with the handbrake IMHO.
 
Rob, the 996 Turbo did indeed suffer from stuck brakes...
I do try to give the car a run after washing to dry off the brakes, but my previous 996 was in black so looked dirty after a brief run around the block [:mad:]..
