sticky gearbox cables covered?

Hi guys,

I have had my car six weeks and ever since getting it the gearstick has never centred itself. eg It just stays between 1 st and 2nd or 5th and 6th when you let go. Its a pain when driving as sometimes i cant find third because it doesnt spring back!

I tried spraying the parts under the gaitor with WD40 but it made no difference.

Its booked in with OPC Chester (bought in Reading) and they said it may need new cables but they may be covered under warranty.

Anyone know if this is the case? If not how much are they?

Chester suggested contacting Reading as the car is new to me (6 weeks / 500 miles ago).

Thanks

Rick

I noticed the same when I first got mine - sloppy gear lever which wouldnt properly centre itself. When I had my major service done at Northway, they did it without me mentioning it and I dont believe they charged extra for it either - what an improvement! It probably just needs the cables adjusting, but an OPC will likely replace rather than adjust, and you'll pay accordingly!

I know that adjustment of the cables isn't covered by the used warranty - a firend had to pay about £100 to have his fixed, essential as he was crunching gears on selection !

If you have had your car for only 6 weeks and bought it from an OPC, they should put it all right at no expense to you. Merchantable quality and fitness for purpose are the watch words to use in these circumstances. This would aslo apply to any garage; things are much more difficult if you bought privately.

And, in my opinion, the warranty should cover this sort of problem - but you will have to read the documents carefully

thanks for the responses!

Took my car to Porsche Chester today and got excellent service [:)] they even washed and cleaned the car inside.

They advised me that the cables are not covered under warranty but they adjusted and greased them which solved the problem and are contacting Porsche Reading (where i bought the car) to get them to pay for it as i have only had it 6 weeks.

It cost 1hr labour at £110 plus VAT for info.

Really impressed with Chester, its not my nearest OPC but i will be going back there for my major service next year [:D]
