Sticky gears

I have a problem with sticky gear shifts, on my 1985 oval dash 944.

When cold there is no problem shifting in or out of gear. However when very warm, sometimes I struggle to take it out of gear. This mostly happens when in 2nd, and I have had it a few times with 3rd. Still no problem getting into gear, only taking it out.

I already tried a few things but not much improvement:
1) replace gearbox oil to new mineral GL4 oil
2) replace gearbox oil to new synthetic GL4 oil
3) adjust pedal play
4) check and adjust clutch slave cylinder to max. 18mm movement
5) adjust gear stick alignment at top of gearbox
6) replace brake fluid and bleed

I am starting to thing that it must be inside the gearbox, however I hope not.

Not sure if this can be a factor, but the clutch rubber center is on it's way out. Which cause a bit of shudder when the car is very very hot.

Any ideas what can cause this sticky gears?
 
Hmm, don't our cars have a separate reservoir and bleed point for the clutch? Maybe try that? I had this problem on my Astra a few years ago but it went away all by itself :p

Maybe it is something to do with the rubber centre. I've no idea what would make the gear stick, shift linkage needs some TLC maybe?

Someone with some proper knowledge should be able to help with this :D
 
I suspect this may be play in the gear linkage or the gear lever ( common wear prob) rather than with the gearbox itself.
If it does turn out to be the gearbox try putting swepco oil in.. not tried it myself but I hear it's very good.

Valid point about the separate reservoir, but I have left hand drive so all in-one for the brakes and clutch.
 
I would spray the rear shift linkage with some release agent. Its on the top of the transaxle, its not a permanent fix but might point you in the right direction.
 
A couple of thoughts:

i) Have you lubricated the ball and socket below the gearlever - it's nylon, I believe, so plastic-friendly lubricant is needed. Something like silicone s[ray should be OK though a grease would be preferable long-term.

ii) When you get this problem, does raising the revs with the clutch still down help the gear to disengage?

i) I have already replaced the socket a while back, as it came with the rubber inner boot gear lever kit

ii) Have not tied this yet. Normally foot is totally off the gas when changing gear. Will give this a shot next time I take it for a drive.
