Sticky Revs...

I've recently got a 1986 944 Turbo in Crystal Green. When I rev the engine it takes a while to get back to idle speed. Can anyone suggest what might be the cause and where to look?

thanks

Id start with checking that the pedal isn't sticking then check the cable run hasn't got a sharp bend in it anywhere. I'd probably disconect at the cam and check the cable is not binding then you can check the throttle spindle and cam pivot are not sticking. Or you could spray everything in sight with WD40 and pray lol[;)]

have you sorted the idle adjust screw yet? IIRC its replaced with a bung, I would start there,

Assuming no air leaks in the Inlet system, (a fairly big assumption on a 944t) then may-be the Idle stabilasion Valve. Its below the inlet manifold. If its U/S it may be a cause, I replaced mine due to both the symptom you describe (which is really unpleasant) plus my idle speed would be 860rpm one day (correct) and 1000rpm another day, and occasionally 600rpm. It fixed the problem.

Thanks All.

Peanut, I will check again but from memory I don't think it's the cable as it happens if I rev the throttle by hand in the engine bay - I can see the throttle is back in it's 'home' position but the engine still takes a while to catch up.

Tony, I ordered the part from OPC Exeter yesterday, they said it will be with me mid next week...

George, thanks for that tip, definitely worth checking - I had a similar problem on my Saab 900T and after giving that a clean it was better. The idle on the 944 isn't ideal (!) it is normally at or just above 1000rpm, never below. Also, (very) occasionally (and not since I bunged that hole mentioned) the engine would gradually rev itself up to around 2500rpm while I was supposedly idling.

Anyway, the idle valve sounds like a good place to start, along with a more thorough boost leak hunt.

Will report back later (possibly much later as I feel awful and flu-ey).
