Stiff brake pedal issue

Got a weird issue with my Turbo's brake pedal....

You know if you pump the brakes or the clutch when the engine is off then the pedals go stiff because they are hydraulically assisted? Well I am getting the same thing when I drive along - typically just after changing gear. The brakes work just fine still but I also notice that when I depress the brake pedal, the clutch pedal goes down a little too, and I can feel shuddering in both pedals as I do so. This is under very light braking, so nothing to do with ABS or the physical brakes themselves.

The really weird thing is that this behavour disappears if you sit on the motorway in 6th for a few mins then it goes back to normal, or if you brake after pushing the clutch fully in. Drive off the motorway onto a slip-road and after changing gear, the stiff brake will be back again. Note there is no such stiffness with the clutch pedal.

I popped into see Chris F at CG yesterday and we could hear a squeek when the clutch was depressed coming from the slave clutch cylinder at the back of the car. So as the clutch and brake use the same hydraulic system he thought that this may be the cause.

I have booked into my OPC for next Mon but wondered if anyone else had come across such a thing before?

Haven't heard of that before Alex but certainly my money would be on the hydraulics. I presume the low fluid warning is working ok!

Alex,

Could be a master cylinder problem where debris blocks one of the ports or there is a defective seal preventing hydraulic fluid working as it should.

Never had a problem on a Porsche but did have a Alfa that blocked its brakes on a regualr basis, usually leaving me stranded for around ½ an hour until the master cylinder had time to recover. [:(]

Definitely a shared system - remember StelvioPass when I boiled off the brake fluid and the clutch was on the floor as well.

As per Clive's comments could be contamination of the hydraulic fluid (water or bits of debris) thats messing it up.

BLOOMIN' TYPICAL

Drove the car down to my OPC this morning - exhibiting the stiff brake issue each time after I changed gear. Dropped the car off, then got a call an hour later saying that they couldn't reproduce the issue. So I went back down and then I couldn't reproduce it either!

I have left the car with them for a few days to investigate (worried about how much that is going to cost!). Perhaps it's related to the cold, or perhaps it was fixed the first test they did with an emergency stop?!

So after 4 days of trying to reproduce this issue at the OPC, we gave up and I brought the car home - seemingly 100% healthy.

Oh well, at least I got a free car wash out of it (even though they probably spent £20 worth of petrol trying to reproduce).

As a young man I suffered from excessive stiffness............now it's just arthritis!

...and stiff drinks!

I reckon that some moisture/air or something go into the system when I left the car out in the cold for a couple of nights whilst I was working away.
