Stiff gearchange on g50

Hello, I've got a new 3.2 carrera (well, new to me) with 60K on the clock, I find the gearchange into 1st and 2nd sometimes needs a good shove. Also when i push it across to reverse, it goes with quite a crack. I don't want to break it! is it normal? what might be up?
Cheers, Dan

Unlike the earlier 915 box the selector 'gate' is actually internal to the G50 transmission itself.

It's a very easy (and cheap) job to pull apart the gearshift lever and replace all the bushes. Might be a case of poor installation of the shifter.

At 60k miles you should not have wear issues. Always the possibility of damage due to abuse I suppose.

Is the box the same whether it's hot or cold?

Same hot and cold i think. think you've got a point with the linkage/bushes. I'll give it a go. now I think about it, from the mid 1-2 position i sometimes feel like I'm shifting down and to the left to 7 o clock, as opposed to straight down to six (if that makes any sense.)

Bush kit is only something like £15 so a good place to start and eliminate troubles there. You can't do too much external to the box so my suggestion would be to do the bushes and check as much as you can back from the shift lever.

Is the shift coupling OK? Have a look through the access plate underneath the carpet in the rear floor.

I had the same problem on my Club Sport and "cured" it with Swepco 201 oil. Although originally designed for the 915 box, the 201 worked very well at fixing this 1-2 baulk ring issue. No problems, hot or cold, in over 5,000 miles of running since.
