Still leaky car, anymore suggestions

Hi

Well this is further to my leaky car question, with water gathering in rear drivers side footwell.
Thought it was side window seal, but appears not after I taped the whole thing up today, only to find a pond in the back again. Do not have sunroof so not coming in there, have blocked fuel entry so nothing coming in there????

Car is parked on incline nose up, so tried hose pipe on drivers side windscreen. Rear of footwell filling up slowly again????

Could there be a drain hole blocked, causing water to run under drivers feet in the metal channels below the carpet and gathering in the rear footwell as the back of the car is lower than the nose????

Any help much appreciated as I am fed up of moping her out.

Cheers

Lee

Sounds like it is comming in with some enthusiasm.

The linings to the side of the roof, and just in front of the top edge of the hatch back, are made from a hardboard type of material. If these are damp this could indicate water comming in past the hatch back seal.

Hi John

No I think it is coming in from the bulkhead at the front somewhere.

My drive is on a slight incline and seems water is entering under the bonnet below windscreen area and somehow getting under the floor????

I have seen on 968 discussions talk of this.

Does the fan assembly in the bulkhead have a rubber seal around it??

Not sure, but will keep searching.

This is all happening when the car is stationery!!!

Cheers again for any help folks

Here is to crossed fingers

Not sure if this will apply tou the 944 but this problem can occur on 924s due to corrosion in the battery box. I would check the bulkhead area.

In extremis, remove the carpets, seats & & sound deadening, block the drain holes and pour water into the bulkhead area. The water level should not drop, if it does, it's going somewhere & with the carpets removed it should be easy to find.

(worked for me with a couple of porous 924s)

Battery do be in rear wheel well on "Oval Dash" 944's, the fuse box is where the battery was on the earlier cars. This has an upstand around it so, assuming the metal is sound, I don't think it would be there.

THe heater fan does sound like a possible cullprit.

[:-] just realised his signature specifies the age of his 944, so battery is in the back. I wouldn't recommend pouring water into the bulkhead area in search of leaks now either !

Still, removal of trim etc would still provide definitive proof of where the water is coming from

the heater assembly has a mastic seal around it. It is quite possible that this has been removed at some point, for example to get access to the wiper assembly which often comes apart and is a pain to access with the heater in place.

Thanks once again everyone.

Steve you may have hit the nail on the head.

I notice from previous invoices I have with the car it has at some point had a new wiper assembly. Maybe the seal has not been replaced properly?

Is it a rubber seal or just from a mastic gun?

Thanks once again

I think it is a rubber seal, but not entirely sure. You may get away with just applying some silicon sealant around it, but it would probably be very difficult (or impossible even) to get all the way round.
I am pretty sure that the heater assembly removes quite easily - I think it's just a case of removing a couple of wires, undoing half a dozen bolts and lifting off. I guess there will also be a couple of vacuum pipes somewhere. Assuming it is straightforward, you are probably better off doing the job right in the first place, but if you go to all this trouble and find this is not the cause of your leak, dont blame me! Have you checked the drains are not blocked with leaves etc?

At the rear of the engine compartment on both sides there is a large square collection point (about a foot square), the right side is under the fuse box. Water should collect here from the windscreen and sunroof drains, and then drain into the wheelarches. Mine get all sorts of gunk in there so I clean them out regularly. If your drains are blocked you could be getting a small lake and when you park on a slope it finds 'other' ways out of the collection point
