Hi all
Im doing a bit of maintenance on one of my sills, Ive bought some hammerite stone chip spray but it comes out smooth when applied. I expected it to leave a dimple/abrasive finish like on the rest of the sills. Have I bought the wrong stuff or is it something a bodyshop would have to put on.

You need to use a schutz gun and some professional stonechip coating. I use one from Wayside Adhesives several times, which doesn't shrink or crack and will allow you to replicate the original finish.
 
I remember a thread years ago referring to a coating by Wurth...pretty sure that's what was used on my car when I had the sills and wings done.
 
It's about getting the pressure right. With a shutz gun you have a lot more control. I found it's possible to get a satisfactory finish with a can of the hammerite stuff (for a temporary/local repair) by pressing the trigger down halfway so that it sort of sputters out.
