Stone Chips (ouch)

Having completely broken the promise I made to myself about only using my Silver C2S for high days and holidays I have to accept that its not going to stay in concourse condition. I accept this as these beautifula cars are made to drive not look at. However, travelling up the A30 in Cornwall, I came up behind a truck that pulled into overtaking lane right in front of me, spraying all cars with what I think were granite chippings. On a normal dull car, I would accept this is bad luck and no big deal but I was really dissapointed to see a number of chips when I got back home. I know that if I drive the car often, then this is the way it goes but this was a bad luck instance and (1) my fault for doing slightly more than 70 at point of impact (!) and (2) bad luck he was carrying granite (but it was Cornwall). While I wont go and have a front end respray every time I get a stone chip, anyone got an idea as to cost of front bumper paint job with a couple of small ones on wing/bonnett ?? Cheers all

(97 C2S and just a wonderful, wonderful car)

A decent body shop will take £400 or so to spray the bumper (assuming there's no damage to it) and probably touch in the chips in the wings/bonnet for free provided there's not too many of them.

I feel your pain. I have the same 97 Carrera S in Arctic Silver and the paint work was perfect when I got it back in October. Although I have basically avoided using it over winter I too have picked up a couple of chips and hate them with a passion! I have done my best to touch them in, but I still know they are there []

The roads are in a terrible state after the winter and it seems nobody is in any great hurry to fix them [&o]

There is a diy product out there called CHIPEX (www.chipex.co.uk) apparently the most comprehensive and bespoke stone chip repair system available for £50. I have read a number of articles about it, that appear to give it a good rating. No doubt a lot depends on how patient you are as well.
Have any of you folks heard about it or could recommend it?

Hi Paul

I was lucky enough to actually get my car worked on by the guys at Chipex - as they wanted a Porsche to display on their website.

Great people, very honest and personable.

Yes - you need to take your time, but the results speak for themselves - I'm very pleased.

(Still waiting to get copies of the before/after photos they took...I'll post them when I get them).

Hi Tom,

Hadn't realised that Chipex provided the service as well. Assumed it was a company marketing a product. That's good to know. Is Chipex a franchise? Because the quality of the work may all depend on one or two people!

Look forward to seeing your photos

Gentlemen

This may sound a bit daft but I would swear blind that when I applied zymol(with extra coat or twos on the front end) to my cars that the number of chips greatly reduced!

Cheers Gents, Really appreciate the feedback and although I knew I was never alone.. it felt a bit like it when I surveyed the pride n joy with a heavy heart after my return from the Wet Country. Clyde, I had in mind £500 so pleased to know worst case is not as bad as feared. Dommorton, you are in good company. Mine bought November and so also spent first three months of ownership under ice/snow/floods !! Again, many thanks chaps. My first post and deeply appreciative of response given it is mid week, end of hols etc.

Well I'm sure you've done more than the pathetic <800 miles I've covered in mine!

I am taking it to work tomorrow and I can't wait!!

Good on you Dommorton. 3500 miles ! Therefore, unlike me tonight, on a beautiful dry day, you dont have to think mmm I have done enough miles and I really should take my very much less exciting other German car !

Coincidentally I noticed mine was looking pretty bad after a recent polish - I've used this stuff before on a 996 so tried it again and its worked a treat - www.drcolorchip.com - dealt with everything except one very deep chip which is still slightly noticable (car is Ocean blue so shows everything). The kit ships from the US but delivered quickly. No affiliation etc. etc.
