Stone Cips

I've recently bought a C2S cab in basalt black and it's the first modern black 911 I've owned (the last black was a 3.2 carrera) One thing I have noticed is that it is ALOT more difficult to keep clean!.....and you do notice the stone chips alot more with this colour. I wash the car sometimes as it looks dirty after a summer shower, even though I'll have washed it the day before! Stone chips are normal, but much more noticeable on black....
 
Whilst polishing the car I have noticed much more stone chips than when I had the car detailed 1 month ago.
I am even noticing them on the roof above the windscren and above the chip pads on the back arch, does anyone else share this problem?(also the car is a C4S in black)

I have also just brought a c2s in Meteor Grey and in the last month have noticed several stone chips on bonnet and wheel arch area. I am already thinking of having the front ones repaired and getting it protected. Just have to convince her who must be obeyed now.[;)]
 
Its the state of the chuffin' roads at the moment! My front bumper was spotless when I bought the car 11 months ago, now it and the bonnet and both wings are peppered with little chips from stones; when they hit the plastic bumper they push up little divets!

I drive my merc harder and faster than the porsche and there are no chips on it, its the crap paint job on porsche thats the problem. The paint is just soft and very thin
 
I have a 2005 996 C4S in black and I must admit that the paint is pretty poor for allowing stone chips to affect the car as they do. I took the car to the Porsche body shop after 18months and asked them what I could do to stop this. I use the car pretty much everyday, so they advised not to do anything (i.e re-spray it) until it got really bad. The reasoning behind this is because the new paint will not be be as hard as the factory paint (which does not say that much!) The front has now just been repainted but the wide arches are peppered with small stone chips, as are the wing mirrors. Using black polish helps, but I think that it is not really on that a 'usable sports car' such as this has such a poor level of hardiness built in to the paint. Both my previous Mercedes and even my wifes Zafira have better paint finishes than the Porsche. Neither however drive the same!

I can relate to that! Following two partial resprays (due to vandelism), the swirl marks on the paint from cleaning are very heavy for such a short time. [:eek:]
 
I have just as many stone chips on my windscreen as I do the bonnet. I was originally going to have some clear bra fitted over the front of my car when new but I am actually glad I didn't now as there are so many chips nowhere near the areas that would have been 'protected'. Upper rear wheel arches, above the windscreen etc etc
 
Not sure why but my 2003 996C4S hardly suffered from chips at all over 30,000 miles. My 2008 997 TT (same colour) used in pretty much the same way / same roads (commuting, continental touring and 3-4 track days a year) is covered in nicks on the bonnet and front PU. The paint seems much thiner and lacks depth. I understand that at some time the paint was changed to water soluable. Does anyone know when and if this could be the problem. I believe Honda are receiving warranty claims for excessive chipping.

The reason you notice more on these dark colours is the colour of the undercoat - they use the same old grey for all cars - hence silver cars don't show the chips as much. Answer - next time you take car to get stone chips done take to trusted body shop and ask them to mix some top coat colour in with the base/underocat - then apply top coat - If you get this done next time you get the dreaded chip it won't stand out like a sore thumb[;)] Black on Black = Black!
