Stone Protection for Rear Arch

edition

New member
Hi,

Can the plastic arch trims be removed and replaced easily? Have a marked one that I would like to replace.

Regards :)

Yes, I have heard you just heat them up with a hairdryer to soften the adhesive and then they peal off easily - not tried it myself yet but I guess I need to - mine are starting to look a bit tired.

Yes this has a knick in it.

I'm just worried about paint falling off! also bubbles in the new one...

Mark is correct, just use a hairdryer. Start in one corner and gradually peel away, just need to get it hot enough for the glue to become soft and only heat the area peeling away as you go. If some adhesive is left behind I used white spirit to remove this wiping the panel with panel wipe afterwards.

Fitting the new ones is tricky, I have fitted 4 now and they are not cheap !! You will need the help of another person and only attempt on a still day, I ruined one when a piece of something got blown onto the adhesive surface.

Wet the panel using a plant sprayer filled with water and a couple of drops of Fairy Liquid, shake it up. The Fairy Liquid helps the surface "wet" better. Remove the backing from the whole Stone Guard and use the second person to ensure it does not fold in on itself. Apply the new stone guard starting with the lower corner nearest the wheel opening, use a plastic applicator like the ones that come with car body filler to ease the guard over the side of the car. If you get any bubbles trapped it is not the end of the world, I did, just pierce the bubble with a pin and smooth out the bubbled area. I found the best thing to do after applying is to leave the car out in the hot sunshine as this seems to help the new stone guard settle on the car.

Hope this helps, good luck.

Andy,
When you say "wet the surface" do you mean you actually stick the new guard to a wet panel? Does this not make it a weak grip? I guess it is to help slide it into exact right place?

They come up every now and again on ebay - I managed to get a pair for around £30.

Had a quick look - doesn't seem to be any for sale right now.

Hi there i am looking to do this next weekend but i need to buy some first. Any suggestions on where to buy them please.

ORIGINAL: edition

Cool cheers for that.

How much are they???

They're £45 each from Porsche, I've had two now. They're traditionally known as "shark's fins" which saves calling them "that bit of plastic film that protects the rear wheel arch etc"

By the way they come in ?four? colours, so be sure to pick the right one. Clear is for a dark car, I think

There is no glue ! No adhesive
neither on old or new

These can be easy as they can be very hard to remove.
No hairdryer here, why ?
because when removing, if you heat with hairdryer, there will be loads of plastic left on the paint.
Do it after a long drive, the whole wing will be heated up from mufflers, the way you cannot heat it up with a hair dryer

To change, remove only one side.
prepare a spray bottle filled with 25% isopropyl alcohol, and 75% distilled water.
A credit card type plastic card to remove excess plastic.
when you remove the plastic, spray abundantly on paint and wipe with old T-shirt until paint is clean.
now wet the area with the solution.
go to the other side and watch details where the old sticker ends on bottom of car, and where it aligns around wheel well.
Now re-wet area and wet the back of film abundantly while peeling off protective back
Now with your ultra clean wet hands, just stick the film to the wing randomly, just to let it rest on car.
Now under film is very wet, and the film slides very easily
START ALIGNING THE FILM FROM BOTTOM AND WHEEL WELL
when straight bottom line aligned with a few millimeters from wheel well, squeege the solution out from bottom AND WORK UP
keep film aligned to countour of wheel well and move up till end of fin
don't remove very small bubbles with hair pin the first three hours, many if not all will dissappear.
do the other side, regards

I did my front ones about six months ago.

In the trade they are known as foils. Mine came from Armourfend, arrived next day complete with fitting solution and a rubber pad to assist with application. Very helpful on the phone regarding fitting.
