Strange noise from my 993 - any ideas?

Hi,

When I'm driving I can hear a noise which sounds like a kettle starting to boil, or water gurgling, which I reckon is coming from the rear end of my 993.

I have never heard this noise before, I was out in the rain today with the car for the 1st time, could it simply be the water being drawn through the whale tail spoiler perhaps?

Engine sounds fine when driving & at idle, no oil leaks or obvious causes.

Anyone experienced this strange occurrence??

Yes had exactly the same, sounds like a coffee perculator! - usually when the engine was cold - I put it down to oil being pumped forward to the cooler. I never really got to the bottom of it, I wondered if the valve to the oil cooler was sticking open. I seem to remember that someone (it might have been my local indy - Northway's but can't be sure) had said that there were quite a few 993 that had started to exhibit the problem but it was nothing to worry about (but best to get it checked out).

My 993 (C4 Varioram) hasn't done it for a while (since the spring) - two things have happened since then - warmer weather and a major service - so I'd forgotten all about it until I saw your post.

Maybe give your Indy a call or perhaps Northway's.

Regards
Anton

It may just be oil returning to the oil tank behind you. This is perfectly normal and seems to depend on the viscocity of your oil. I had this for a while, then it stopped for a bit, then came back. Just keep an eye on the oil level if the noise stops!

Coffee perculator is an accurate description of the 'fault', if it is that.

Thanks for your quick replies it has put my mind at ease somewhat.

Regards, Iain.

I hear this, but much worse when the car is cold and has been parked up for some days (& weeks). Spoke to Dave S at Strasse during the Harewood meeting. He says it is normal and worse when the car has been parked up, as the pump is moving oil from the engine, where it has seeped under gravity, back to the tank. Apparently some cars are worse than others. Coffee perculator is a good description.

Mine's been making the "kettle" noise in the recent hot weather and I'm sure it's the air con that's the cause.

I used genuine Porsche oil filters... no gurgling. I then tried MANN filter and had gurgling... the swapped back to Porsche and no gurgling.. same oil.

Car hasn't made this noise since I 1st posted this thread, I must say that I appreciate all your replies as they have reassured me that it isn't a massive issue.

Cheers, Iain.
