Strange noise from rear

Chris Preston

Ex Club Member
My car has started making a hollow sounding clunking from the rear. I thought the exhaust was loose but it isn't.
The clunking varies with road speed not engine speed and disappears when I press the clutch so I guess its something to do with the torque tube??
Its intermittent ie ok for 20 miles then starts for another 20 miles then stops and so on. Before I throw my credit card at the problem does anyone have any ideas what it could be??
Its getting to the stage where I am afraid to drive the car for fear of doing some major damage.
Oh and by the way my engine block is not for sale......hopefully[&:]

Sounds like cv joints on the rear axle shafts starting to go.There's 4 - two per shaft.
Mine did the same last summer.Had to replace one cv joint but i cleaned the remaining three up which were ok, replaced the rubber boots as they were starting to perish and then repacked the boots with molybdenum grease and refitted them.Messy job though.

I'll start swatting up on CV joints, How did you know which one to replace?
The drivers side axle shaft had more movement when i grabbed hold of the shaft and tried to turn it slightly than the other side but I wasn't 100% sure until i'de removed it and cleaned the joints - sure enough the one cvs' was very scored and pitted with very little grease in the boot.
I had a good idea it was this because i'de previously had to do it on my old 924lux which was the same procedure but smaller cv joints. The big problem though is the bolts that secure the shafts have a splined head and they can be sods to remove.I've replaced the ones on my cab with "allen" heads now.

If you can get those splined bolts out easily, you can buy yourself a little extra time by swapping round the shaft so that the inner CV is now on the outside and vice versa.

I imagine it's quite frustrating to do that and then find the previous owner had already done it :ROFLMAO:

Hmm, the noise on mine seems to be coming from the passenger side, and frankly taking it all apart is beyond my DIY mechanic skills.Let alone putting it all back together again.
At least I can now tell the garage what I think it is now, thanks chaps.

Use new bolts on the CV joints or they will fall out.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]It's only your cylinder head we want, you can keep the block [:D][FONT=verdana, geneva"]
