Strange noise

My S2 has recently developed some annoying noise on left turns while moving. This noise is a bit different from the usual 944 steering turn noise. Its a bit louder with a deeper clonking noise and I can also feel it on the steering wheel. Is it something serious I wonder e.g. steering rack? The power steering pump (recon) is fairlly new which has been replaced last year so can it be discounted?
