strange noise

yep checked the fluid level hot and cold and its fine, is the abs pump on this side could it be that as the warning light is on but I put that down to a sensor?
 
use a rubber hose as a make shift stethoscope to find where the noise is coming from. If you are hearing it from inside the car bear in mind sound can travel (eg if you have the drivers window down but not the passenger side). Bleed the power steering by turning the wheels from lock to lock a few times with the engine running, then check the fluid level again maybe.
 
Hi all, Got a strange noise coming from the front drivers side engine area?? Its more evident when you are at slow speeds or at stand still, the noise I would say sounds like a low whirring sound like a pump letting pressure by?? any ideas?

Now you didn't mention the abs light......... That's probs what it is although I would reckon you would be able to feel the abs working through the pedal when you touch the brake.Put your ear just below the side repeater indicator on the drivers side wing and you will be able to hear the abs pimp is it is running.
 
The abs doesn't seem to work, done a basic test this morning ( stamped on the brakes and it just locked up) the noise does seem to be coming from the area where the pump is, can the pumps be rebuilt or is it a sealed unit, also whats the chances of finding a decent second hand unit? from what I can find out if one of the sensors have gone or bad earth etc would this disable the complete abs system?
 
Decent second-hand unit will be about £60 delivered from the states. I've changed the pump on both cars I've had to repair the ABS. The last one needed a couple of sensors as well but this one just needed a new(er) pump and all is well. I gave it a very liberal coating of Dynax too in a hope of preventing it from going bad.
 
seen Porsche apart have one on ebay for £160 with a best offer which looks very clean and tidy may see if I can get them down a bit?? the usa ones are cheaper but if they are faulty its a pain sending them back. is it just a case of re-moving the inner wing plastic and then exchanging the pump as I will be doing all this myself as on a tight budget..
 
If you're sure that the pump is the problem then it's not too bad to change it. Wheel off, arch liner out and you do it through the gap and from underneath. 4 nuts hold the pump mounting plate in at the bottom, it took me 5 mins to remove the first three and about an hour and a half for the 4th due to them rusting up. Make sure that you have a ratchet spanner and a brake-line spanner to get the nuts loose first without rounding them off. You'll need to bleed the brakes afterwards as well. The reason they fail is that they get corroded and the surface can be seen to physically blister.
