strange oil readings

I started off yesterday with the little line at the top missing, got to a petrol station 15 minutes later and the top big section was missing.......drove an hour, parked up for 15 minutes then started up and the oil was full.

Is this because of the cold or is something on the blink?

thanks all !

yes, dead flat every time. i had the rms replaced a little while ago under warranty and was a bit worried that either it wasn't done right (can't say i have noticed any fresh leaks) or that they didn't fill it up right.

the reason why i mention the temp outside is that when my brother started his BMW 330 up the same day it also said he had low oil - seemed a bit coincidental - my first post should say 'c'old !

Pretty much normal from my experience.

I tend to agree with John. The gauge on my car always seems to vary by one or more segments either way every time I start up. I have to admit to being old school and trust the dipstick rather more than the gauge so check the level physically once a week and also before a longish run.

I recall reading somewhere recently that the engine oil level should be checked when the engine is at its working temperature (ie after a run rather than before) but this seems counter-intuitive to me as I'd like to know that I've got enough oil before I turn the key.

Alan.
