Strange power steering issue

Hi, I have a 2004 996.2 C4 with 102k miles. Started it a few days ago after it had been sat for 2 weeks. After 30 secs of running, there was a loud groaning noise whenever I turned the steering. I stopped and checked the power steering fluid level, which was off the bottom of the dipstick. Ordered some Pentosin CHF 11 S and added around 200ml today to bring it to the top of the cold mark. Started the engine and turned the wheel full left to right a few times. No noise this time, then I noticed a strange mist coming from inside the o/s wheel arch. I took the pressure off the steering and it stopped, then put it on full lock and it appeared again, immediately. I took a video and turned the car off. Now just looking for some advice, please. I’m in the depths of North Devon, so anywhere is a long way to drive from here.

Hi Rod,

Your PAS oil level was very low and it sounds as though you have a leak either from the rack itself or more likely from a pipe union. I’m not sure that it would be safe to drive the car any distance so probably it would be better to get it trailered to a repairer if you’re unable to do the work yourself.

Hi, Definitely a leak on your power steering rack. Had it happen to mine. Apparently the unions between the flexible pipes and the rack corrode and leak so I had mine replaced by my specialist as a preventative matter who made their own replacements as Porsche don't offer these and will sell you a full rack!
My leak was a few months later though when the flexible pipe developed a hole so was replaced in full, but it requires the front sub frame to be dropped so might be worth checking brake pipes or suspension as well.
I drove about 20 miles to get to my specialist just topping up the fluid a few times, but it made a right mess underneath which was steam cleaned afterwards.
Good luck.
