strange whistling sound!

Hey all,

Anyone able to shed some light on why my cars started 'whistling'? (its not squealing)

It doesnt matter if you moving or stationary, the whistling starts at 2k RPM, at 3k RPM gets even higher pitched, and at 4k RPM sets of the neighbours dogs. To be honest im not sure if i want get rid of the noise as i was able to replicate the american anthem whilst sat in traffic today!.. lol [:D]

...i'm sure its not a belt as i have heard a belt squealing before and this doesnt sound anything like that.

Its got me beat too. I have no idea what it might be either, but its 'whistling' like a mad thing. Might be worth recording the sound and uploading it if it helps?

PS. Its a really loud noise (thats why im worried)...


 
Sounds like a bearing to me from the description. Alternator, water pump, one of the belt rollers etc.
 
Cheers Fen, its the same noise as you would make if you whistled yourself (well, kinda 'ish!). So its a garage job again then? [:(]
 
The heater vacuum diaphragm on my car is whistling but I dont think early cars had those - might be one for something else though. If its a bearing a long screwdriver held to the ear might help with locating the problem - keep it away from moving parts though! [:mad:]

...ok, been out to check again (its really got to me [:D]) and when the cars cold, its not so noisy more of a shhhhh'ing noise than a whistle (its coming from the drivers side of the car).

If it was a bearing noise it would be all the time wouldnt it?
 
Hmm, if it's more whistle than howl maybe it isn't a bearing, though I'd suggest temperature is more likely to affect a metal bering than a plastic or rubber hose.

If it is a bearing then it needs addressing fairly quickly as it might be the precursor to some rotating part effectively falling off, and you either don't want that or you really, really, really don't want that depending which specific belt will fall off with it.

Whether or not it's a garage job depends on a lot I can't comment on such as availability of tools, confidence taking things apart etc. I'd be taking it to my indie and fixing it with him as a learning experience if it were mine and I was in the UK, but then I had a slightly unusual relationship with my indie that allowed that sort of thing.
