Stress fractures to Mag Cups

Hi,

I have just been informed by Diamond Styling that my rear Mag has a couple of stress fractures on the inner rim. They did not recommend repairing it. Phoned Jasmine and they reckon it can be welded successfully then refurbished. The other one is still with the PO so will wait and see if it is the same.

Anyone else had this problem? Anyone else got a spare 9 " Mag Cup 1 around?

Personally I blame the previous owners, Thomas and PhilRS for thrashing the car round the ring and Spa instead of polishing it and only bringing it out on high days and holidays. ;O)

Might be worth checking your own Mags before hitting the track season?

I had 2 x rears welded and then refurbed last year, no loss of pressure since, only downside was a slightly heavier spot, so more balance weights needed than before welding.

Main thing is how badly cracked are they? ..............i had 2 repaired a while back ,fine on the road, but let go at Silverstone with even longer crack resulting..............polite word, Diamond Styling see a lot of wheels if he says they re not repairable why not ask him why etc .............his experience is more than most people .

On this particular day, I was glad that the roof was solid. I was less concerned about the wheels [:D]
 
Wondered what the dent in the roof was from.

Chris says the cost of repair and refurbishment would be better spent on new wheels. The heat expansion and negative camber will mean the inner rim will go again. Probably when doing 140mph at Spa. This means it could be a bit hairy!!!! Sudden blow outs normally are.

I may go for 18" for the track but read the split rim Speedlines are quite a bit heavier than the Mags.

The BBS Mags may be another option.

These Mag wheels can be welded succesfully.I have a chap near me who welds mag wheels,titanium,ali etc And pretty well any space age light weight alloys.He repairs cars for martin strettons racing fleet,and charges £24 per hour.One point he said is to make sure the wheels are crack tested afterwards,again he can get this done.
At least it keeps these wheels original and going.As they are getting clearly more difficult to find,there are a few sets of refurbed wheels about for sale,but under that paint could be anything.I would recommend you get them cracked tested every couple of years.
 
Can I have his details please? May be worth fixing but I still don't fancy using them on the track. I can stick them on the Corrado instead as there is no weight over the back of the car.
