Strut Brace

Can I please have some recommendations on which strut brace to fit to my '79 SC. I will not get limitless funds from the long haired bank manager but do not want something cheap and flimsy. I saw a Sparco aluminium one at Need For Speed for about £65 + VAT, but there are lots of options. What do you recommend?
Thank you
Ian

Hi mate,

I have an Elephant Racing brace but it is yet to go on, it has the monoball top mounts and then the brace affixes to those using collars either end, so front will be a lot stiffer when I eventually get my butt into gear on it. I bought it second (or third) hand so it was a lot cheaper than the new price.

When I was at Husborne last year there was a guy sellling the Weltmeister braces for £120, wouldn't go any less so I left it, but they are recognised as pretty good as they bolt onto the shell; you want to steer clear of the ones that sit on the tops of the shocks, proper handbrake-in-a-canoe stuff. I like Sparco gear, OMP also pretty good, though IMO you want to keep away from cast ally, go for billet or fabricated parts. What does the Sparco one look like? How does it fit to the car?

Have you tried a search on Pelican to see what the guys there recommend? That would be my first port of call in your shoes.

Hi Ian

I ordered a strut brace for my 3.2 from Steve Wong (supplier of DME chips for 3.2 carreras) last year and have been really happy with the quality and fit. It is beautifully made and weighs next to nothing.

See http://www.911chips.com/C1strut.htm

The exchange rate may not be as favourable now, but ordering from Steve was completely painless.

Hope this helps

Anil

Thanks John and Anil,
All I have seen of the Sparco brace is the bar and not the mountings. I understand that the Weltmeister one picks up on all three mounting on both sides, does this mean that you need to get your front end aligned again? The Steve Wong one looks nicely made, but what did you pay for postage/tax etc?
Thanks again guys, please keep the advice coming
Regards
Ian

Nope, the Weltmeister one is suitable for home fitment. It ties in the strut top but the alignment is not affected. Its functionally better than the braces like SW's because of the restriction on movement of the strut. Perhaps not as pretty.

You can see here: http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/images/John1/welt_strutbrace_kit.jpg how the strut top pieces tie in 2 of the 3 mounting bolts and the strut top. Pelican also has install instructions online.

I will put mine up for sale on the 3.2 board in the next 6 weeks. Its "as new" and I would take £90 for it. I have a triangulated bar/brace I am going to try out.

Personally I would have the weltmeister over the SW as it offers more support to the strut being attached in both the front and rear of the tower. As it's well hidden and does a better job the cosmetics hardly matter IMO.

Thanks Richard, John,
Very useful to get this advice. Richard, would mind pencilling me in as very interested in your strut brace. I just have to enter into lengthy negotiations to get a large advance on my pocket money/birthday/Xmas present!!!

Hello Ian,

In case you are interested (and end up with limited funds [;)]), I have just taken my Sparco one out of my car (need extra space to fit baby gear in the front boot [:D][:D]) and would be happy to sale to you for £45 inc P&P. It is as new, does the job no problem and very easy to fit.

Let me know

Will be available in circa 3 weeks at a negotiable price - send me a mail then to remind me.

I have the Weltmeister brace on my car - fitted by the PO.

Only downside is the loss of room in the front compartment!
