Its relatively quiet on the RS forum so I thougt I'd ask a couple of questions:

Firstly, has anyone fitted or experienced KW suspension, especially the so called Nurburgring spec. If so what are your thoughts on road or track, how well do they last (I've seen reference to them waring out) and does this forum have an issue with non- standard spec. I recall Tony's excellent RS book seeming to praise this set-up

On a totally seperate matter can anyone tell me what happened to 911 lightweight fan Chris Harris of Autocar and GTPP fame? I am a fan of his and he seemed to suddenly disappear off the face of the earth.

Ian

Thanks Jamie

I may be wrong but I can't help thinking that Chris must have done something wrong for him to disappear from both mags so quickly with no reference to his absence. Anyone?

You have to be kidding! If you look at what DR is doing, it is not suprising that Chris isn't working for the mags he used to. Take a look. It is the biggest threat to the likes of Evo there has been on-line. In fact, it is most of the good people from Evo. I don't think any of them would want to work for any of the opposition. And good luck to them. IMO, it offers so much more than a conventional magazine.

I have KW variant 3 suspension fitted to my RS and i'm very happy with it. It's a matter for personal taste but i feel it's an improvement on the original equipment. I have yet to get to the ring with the new kit fitted and it's been on for about two years now (maybe a little less). I have mainly used it round Spa , Brands and Oulton . I find it's much more compliant on the road but equally at home on the track. Difficult to describe but often compliance is compared or goes with softness. This is not the case with the KW setup, it still has little body roll and has the "feel" of the standard setup but with the crash and bang dialled out. I should note my KW's were bought from KW direct and are what was suggested by them. Manthey will also sell you a KW kit. I do not know if there is any difference in the valving of the Manthey KW's. For a more in depth view of using them on a 964 RS at the ring try and get in contact with joe 911 on pistonhead or Jules Perry on ringers forum(same person , i think!)
There is nothing wrong with the original equipment setup but the KW's offer imho an upgrade step at similar money to oem . You pays yer money etc.

Thanks Simon and Laurence

Point taken about Chris Harris but I still find it unusual for 2 mags to part company with such a prominent author without any reference.
.
Laurence, your KW setup sounds ideal. My car has covered 55,000 miles and has only had one new top-mount fitted in my ten years ownership so I am mentally preparing for some cost before too long (same goes for my clutch). I do plenty of road miles and got used to the RS's ways many years ago but an improvement in road manners with no loss of on-track ability is tempting. Do you mind me asking approx cost?

Thanks again

Harris left Autocar and GTPP to set up DR with Meaden and Jethro, it's not like he was fired by his previous employers ! No great surprise that neither mag trumpetted the fact that he was leaving......... It's clearly a big risk to go "purely" on-line, but it's a pretty damn good product. I say good luck to 'em !

I paid around £1500 for the kit of four shocks and springs. I re-used my top mounts. You would have fitting / setting up costs on top. The KW kit for the 964RS is made to fit the uniball mounts. Some other manufacturers kits may /may not require new top mounts.

Interesting stuff Laurence! You have mail!

I'm sure Chris Harris made it clear in at least one of the mags he was writing for that he was leaving to take on a new project - and excellent Drivers Republic is - although I not keen on some of the navigation - and is Richard Meaden EVER going to provide an update on is RS?

Tony

Tony mail sent! which prompts me to say...to use the adjustability of the KW's to the full you need to drill a small hole in the top mount "nut" in order to get at the adjuster (i then used rubber bungs to stop dirt ingress) . Just in case anyone was wondering !
