Sublime Gear Change

Well the car is off the axle stands after a new clutch, linkage, lightened flywheel (I'm aware of the positive and negatives that come with that) and lots of other parts. First little test drive this evening, whoa what a difference! its night and day, needless to say I'm a happy bunny [:D]

Now hopefully its only running rich because the battery has been disconnected for four months :rolleyes:
 
You're not wrong Pete especially when you throw in some bodywork on the passenger sill and wing. I also changed my tyres as they were five years old and hard, I've heard good things about Nexen Nfera su1's so I have given them a whirl, instantly feels softer and a more compliant ride but I'm not able to test them toughly yet as I need to put 300 miles on the flywheel to bed it in.
 
Hi Scott, did you lighten your original or have you got an alley item?

i just had my original refaced in preparation for total engine rebuild and figured I may as well get it slightly lightened whilst refacing anyway on the lathe, which is what I had done in the end, in hope for a little edge.

Can you explain the differences from before to now?

i was going for a alloy one but reviews put me off .

Does the aceleration feel a lot faster than before
 
Its hard to say at the minute, I read lots of reviews but as this is the second car I have owned in succession to have a lightweight flywheel I decided to go ahead. The instructions recommend "normal" driving for up to 300 miles to bed it in and so far I'm only 20 miles into that figure so its a little early for a full conclusion. My initial thoughts are its not as bad as I expected. There are some different noises yes but nothing really untoward, i've not really taken it over 3000 rpm so I can't say i've seen them rise quicker, I have noticed them drop a little quicker but nothing drastic in the first 7 miles I soon learnt to dip the clutch a little earlier especially in the first to gears.

At the end of the day its in better condition than the one that I removed.
 
Hi Scott, sounds promising , and sorry I got ahead of myself , I forgot you need 300 miles before to run it in ?? I bet you can't wait to put your foot down to see what it's like.

you must post on this thread again to let us know how you find it once you run it in and you can fully test it.

i was considering one myself a while back, but reviews and people's opinions seem to be 50/50 . I myself was looking forward to the revs rising quicker for acceleration and wasn't too bothered that they may fall quicker, but it was the motorway inersia part that got me worried as I love the way mine now pulls in 5 gear from 70 all be it I have to wait a couple of seconds but didn't want long motorway driving to become less smooth in the way that revs we're to drop quickly if lifting off the throtle that would probably bother me a bit, but only on the motorway where i like the smoothness at the moment , and the revs fall very slowly becuase of the inersia so I went safe but tried some weight off my standard flywheel. Won't know till I build her up but I have a lot of other upgrades going in at the same time so it won't be a straightforward for me to determin what's made the biggest difference.

So im really looking forward to hearing how it works out for you.

So finally I've managed to complete 300 miles and what have I learnt?

I like it! The car definitely picks up and builds speed quicker, the drop of in rev's isn't as noticeable as you might think, I only really noticed it changing down for 2nd and 1st and after two outings its no longer noticeable and I don't notice changing down for overtakes either.

Loss of torque?

Again no real issues, the only time it does feel a little less is slowing right down for a down hill 90 degree turn which is a toss up between labouring in 2nd gear or almost stopping to go into 1st gear.

Noises?

Not quite sure about this one, I do notice some noise but it does not come from the front of the car, it is a driveline noise/whine which sounds like its coming from the rear which is most noticeable on slow deceleration & acceleration in 2nd gear, I don't think its the gearbox itself as it wasn't there before (plus its just had new oil) the car has also just had a new torque tube and pilot bearing so that rule them out, my guess is the noises generated by the lighter flywheel are resonating down the torque tube and are being amplified in the gearbox bell housing.

Glad to hear its its feels good and I always think these sort of things come down to taste and peoples preferred styles of driving and what they like there cars to do and feel.

i myself love the smoothness on the motorway but enjoy the rawness and acceleration on B roads ect.

i think I'd really like it it's only the motorway driving where I read the revs will fall rapidly that put me off buying a alloy flywheel, becuase of the loss in inersia, so I decided to go in the middle and get mine lightened as I was getting it refaced and balanced. ( will find out how it drives fingers crossed next year?)

I did some motorway speeds and the revs didn't really drop off that bad, I guess it would be more noticeable in a non turbo car.

On the flat I don't notice any drop off in my N/A, only when going up an incline is more throttle required but then a stock flywheel car would also need some to maintain
the same speed, but it's hard to know how much more a engine with less spinning metal weight (Which Maintains inertia) requires than a standard car.

What I do know is my lightweight Crank / Flywheel / Pistons and Rods and (1/2 balance shafts) make the RPM rise much quicker than any stock car I've driven inc the twin cams
(3.0S2 & 968) as you'd expect with 8kg less mass to turn.

However I've not driven this car's engine in a standard weight car, where the effect would not be a dramatic, so i's really a combination of the two :
less (Engine) mass to rotate, and less (vehicle weight) mass to move.
