Suction from the oil fill tube

Hello all. Question - should there be any suction from the oil fill tube when the engine is on tick-over? I noticed mine has some - I wouldn't say a lot, but there is some.

Many thanks.

Graham,

Most probably a faulty air-oil separator and a fairly common fault with the F-6 water-cooled engines. Often accompanied by a lot of (whitish?) smoke on start-up and something which should be investigated ASAP to avoid potential catalytic converter contamination.

Yes there should be some suction, about 5" on a water gauge and that's quite normal.
A faulty AOS would give other symptoms and a lot higher suction sometimes such that you cannot even remove the oil cap its that high.

Thanks for the quick feedback Jeff, Andy.

Not seen any smoke, white or otherwise, on startup or running. I will keep a closer eye out for white smoke. Will investigate how to measure.

Many thanks, Graham.

Mine suffered from this which triggered the EML after a while, but the car was running well with no obvious noise/smell/visual problems.

I bought an ODB Reader to investigate further and it reported error codes P0171 & P0174 - System Too Lean on Banks 1 & 2.

Initially i thought the Lambada sensors as that seemed to be the consensus on the forums and confirmed by a phone call to my mechanic, but it then started to kick out white smoke. It turned out to be the Air Oil Separator as mentioned by Graham & Andy and the tell was strong suction making the removal of the oil cap difficult.

The engine did need to be dropped to replace, but that turned out to be quite fortuitous as it revealed some other items that were perished and would have needed replacing soon anyway.

So definitely something to keep an eye on.

Thanks for the info Darren. Was your engine removed or just lowered a little to give access?

I did a bit more internet surfing and made a manometer. I reckon that my engine is pulling about 6 inches of water with the engine warm and idling. So not terrible, but not what you might expect in perfect condition.

I will keep an eye out for white smoke and measure again in a few months time.

Engine lowered, although i wasn't there at the time so i don't know by how much.

It actually deteriorated very quickly and went from a few white puffs at start up to puffing like a steam train with any prod of the accelerator and i thought the head gasket had gone, so it was a huge relief that it was 'only' the AOS. But still a 4 figure repair bill (including some other preventative maintenance) and a ride on a flat bed truck !

Thanks for the confirmation Darren - appreciate that.

Like I said, will keep an eye out for smoke and repeat the measurement again in a few months time.
