Suggested Driving Roads / Routes ?

Hi All,
Started to get into doing destination drives and driving routes.
I took a video of it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A-cikPgrFbg

We went to Wales last week and I found this mega route that takes you from Wye Valley through the Brecons and out to Llandovery.
Some stunning roads on the route and it takes about an hour. There's a link in the description of the video that will give you the main part of the route. There is some stunning scenery on the way, some awesome climbs, valleys, twist and terns, town driving and some mega straight roads to.

Was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions of some other places / routes that are good? After the past couple years being a bit strange I really want to get out there and explore with car and enjoy some awesome roads + visit a few places in and around the UK.

Was thinking about the NC 500 next... has anyone done that?

The Club has some driving routes on the Club web site:

https://www.porscheclubgb.com/community/driving-routes

There are also driving routes on the Porsche Roads App

Not that may people seem to want to share their best routes on very public forums, perhaps because they can end up being too popular?

The EVO triangle and the NC500 are cases in point. Has anyone done the NC500? the answer is yes! Hundreds of thousands most in rented motorhomes!

Best thing is get out a real paper map, plan yourself an interesting route avoiding all trunk roads (Usually coloured green on most maps) - stick to non-trunk A roads, B roads and unclassified roads and go somewhere no-one else goes. Sat nav take people on the main roads , so the subsidiary roads are often almost traffic free. custom route using google maps, using stops to make it take you where to go.

Plot yourself a custom route in Google Maps to make it take you where you want to go by using stops, save it by emailing it to yourself, pop a phone holder on the windscreen and off you go.

Hi Graham,

Thanks for the reply... was playing about with how to create a custom route last night... I didn't realise that you could do that on Google maps.

The NC500 does sound amazing and am thoroughly looking forward to doing it at some point but didn't realise that it is so popular so I'm guessing it is pretty busy?

Never heard of the EVO triangle but had a look at it ... looks pretty awesome.

To be fair part of my recent journey took us through the Brecon Beacons national park... that was a seriously amazing driving road... I don't understand how they keep the roads so well maintained considering the hills. In Cambridge where I live, when you go out driving it feels like your playing a video game called ' Pot Hole Evader' lol

Mark,

The problem with well-publicised routes like the NC500 and the EVO triangle is that they’re bound to be busy, the summer months in particular. I have friends who have a cabin on the Isle of Skye which I’ve been visiting for many years and know the Western Highlands well and I like go out of the main season in April/May and September/October, usually when it’s not too busy. As Brian Innes will confirm, there are some fantastic Highland roads other than the NC500 route which for a lot of the year are much less busy.

I drove the NC500 in 2019, amongst other routes, which I've just added to my "My 2019 UK tour" thread. Note these are the Google Maps routes which I created as a starting point, I subsequently refined them with TomTom MyDrive for use on my standalone TomTom device.

Hi Jeff,

That sounds amazing.

I don't know why but our Wales trip has really got me super interested in doing drives which follow a specific route or lead to a specific destination.

Although the nc 500 sounds like its a super busy route I 100% need to tick this off my list lol...

What and where you say is the best all time route / your favourite?

Hi Andrew .... wow!!!!!!

That was super cool - loved the thread and the photos... and that was very cleaver what you did with the google map routes / tom tom routes.

Looked like an incredible trip and some stunning roads there.

How did the Porsche get on with the roads?... probably nothing out there that better for the job :)

Looked like you had some glorious weather to :)

What was your favourite part?

The Triangle now has average speed cameras, so not the fun it used to be. There are better roads in the area anyway, so plenty to chose from.

Mr Pg... sounds like the triangle has been pretty much ruined lol... average speed cameras are starting to be literally everywhere now :-(

I, along with some friends, did this https://slapadventures.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/North-Wales-Driving-Route.pdf route in the summer and can say it probably makes use of the best mix of roads in North Wales (inc. the EVO Triangle).

If you overnight the night before in somewhere like Shrewsbury then the route is doable in a day.

Here are couple of YouTube videos of our trip that will provide an insight of the roads, surfaces, scenery: Day 1, https://youtu.be/ZFJQ0pRD3Ow Day 2, https://youtu.be/pqcEl8vmT-M

The Porsche had no problems with the roads, but we did treat it as a leisurely drive and not a race, so to be perfectly honest my Audi Q3 would probably have been better for the job, but not so photogenic!

We saw such good scenery everywhere so it's difficult to pick a favourite part but the journeys from John o'Groats to Locharron stand out. We followed the advice of Brian Innes and took the anti-clockwise route because the scenery keeps getting better.

Sounds like a fantastic trip… I guess most decent cars would have been fine with the trip but nothing would have made it feel as special as the Porsche :)

Mark,

As I mentioned I’m a regular visitor to Skye from North Beds and prefer to take the A1 north to Scotch Corner then:

A66 Penrith

Skirt round Glasgow and pick-up the A9 to Stirling and Perth (lots of long distance average speed cameras)

A889 to Dalwhinnie (a stop at the distillery?) from which the drive becomes much more interesting!

A86 to Spean Bridge

A82 to Invergarry

A87 to Skye

Have a look on a map and you’ll get an idea what the drive’s like … plenty of Lochs!

Jeff
