Yesterday, after a five month wait, I collected my 981 2.7 PDK. It rained on my way to the dealer; it rained while I was there; it rained on my way home through the Friday rush hour; it rained all day today - but who cares! Surely it must be summer now.
With my previous 987 going to my next door neighbour we were able to park them side by side, and as enthusiasts we saw all the subtle little improvements on the 981. The shorter overhangs give it a more muscular look and a bigger interior, the roof line is smoother and less like a pram hood, the instrumentation is awash with new touches, it has a very pretty rear end, and the leather package is a great way to enhance the inside finish without the fearsome cost of full leather. The ignition 'key' looks nothing like one, and contains all sorts of secrets if you can spare the time to read the handbook. The electric steering feels no different to me, but then I'm no racing driver. Apparently it saves the fuel necessary to keep a hydraulic pump running all the time.
After a whole twenty-four hours of ownership [] I can find few quibbles. Lots of inside storage cubby holes have disappeared though, like the ones behind your head, the big one in front of the battery in the front boot, and the central one under the PCM/radio unit. The door pockets and the rear boot are smaller too. The start/stop is a little unnerving at first, but I guess I will get used to it, and I have yet to master the electric 'hand' brake despite instruction! The touch-screen PCM is easier to use, but still requires a serious study of the handbook, but the voice activation is magic!
When I arrived at the OPC my car was enveloped in a tailor made cover, so I had to wait until the formalities were completed before I could enjoy my first look. It also had canvas covers on all four wheels, which I assumed were tyre warmers to help me with a fast exit! Although I had heard of this procedure from others, this was the first time for me and certainly hightened my anticipation.
As I have been unable to talk to anyone with a 981 2.7, as opposed to the S, I had lots of queries which nobody could answer with certainty. If anyone has a similar problem then please get in touch and I will do my best to help.
