Sump Gasket Replacement

Hi all

I thought I would share this experience with everyone

Yesterday I had my car booked in at a local new Independent Porsche specialist I also think they are worth including in this post here http://www.pecarspecialists.co.uk/html/home.html

When I bought the car last year I contacted the previous owner and was informed of the slight leak on the Sump dripping onto one of the heat deflectors causing a rather smoky oil burn for the first 5 mins then as the engine got hotter it either burnt away or sealed whichever was not a serious problem, however I purchased the Sump seal with intention to replace it when I could ... that day being yesterday.

A job not for the faint hearted I would be the first to admit especially with the involvement to complete it is a mamoth task indeed all the front suspension has to be disassembled, the engine supported on a beam from above and the front transom beam lowered to allow the sump to be coaxed away, then the exhaust removed from the turbo and wastegate section as the sump will not release due to it being so close to the top of the pipes.

Both the guys worked all day on my car and completed it in great time to an excellent standard replacing any coroded or damaged bolts etc as necessary while the sump was off a thorough inspection of the botttom end was carried out and even though the oil pick up was very clean that also was sprayed and wiped clean before the seal was replaced.

A new oil filter was fitted and without stating the obvious the oil was replaced. Both the guys are Porsche experienced technicians as I am sure they would tell you over any enquiry I have entrusted my car to them for all future servicing and work competetive pricing and more than excellent service is hard to find and I would like to say they are the new independent in the Yorkshire area!!

regretfully I did not take any photos during the work I really wish I had its not a very pleasant sight to see your 944 in pieces and the engine supported by a single chain from a cross beam.

If any work on your car is needed and they are within travelling distance give them a call even though the 944 is not in their pricing structure I am sure you will be accomodated as I have been .... A very happy customer well done Guys

Hi Will it's J you bought the Air Con pump from me , I am still on a mission sent from God restoring my 944 Turbo and have purchased a sump gasket costing just over £30 , I tryed to weigh the job up and as you have clearly described thought that the sump was a bit close to the cross member to allow for it to drop down away from the Oil pick up pipe . Lucky the exhuast system and Turbo are off on my one , and the steering rack too , so hopfully wount be to bad lying on my back doeing the Sump Gasket . When I drained the very poor oil , I found small particles of what seemed to be metal shavings , so I want to inspect the bottom end of the engine make sure the shelfs are ok , I think the shavings are from the Oil Cooler breaking up inside and then circulating to the sump . Any clues ? Best regards J

two guys working all day on a sump gasket? What were they doing for the rest of the day?

book time is just short of 6 hours on turbo version...

997 coil packs , aircon service , and a couple of other bits on Mr Lyons car ...

we are a new business and are still building our customer base and it is great to have customers like Will .. pleasure to deal with..

and we will also be offering a discount to pcgb members

Hi J

Your allready 90 percent there all you need to do now is support the engine from above so you can release the mounting from the transom beam and lower the beam to allow the Sump to clear the pickup pipe while it is off you will be able to give it a good clean and remove any of those metal bits you have seen.

My oil was very clean with no debris the sump was cleaned out to remove all residue before it was replaced

Today the Dansk stainless exhaust was fitted previous one had blown a couple large holes so needed to be replaced.

I will try and get over again to see the progress and maybe give a hand to put it back together no promisses though its a fair distance
