sump removal

ORIGINAL: gwilliamson

could anyone help me with this please?
can you remove the sump from a porsche 944 without removing the engine?
thanks

Support the engine from above, remove the cross member.

thanks - are you sure that the steering rack needs to be removed?

reason for dropping sump is to remove oil pump due to one minute delay in pressure registering after start up after one or two weeks lying idle - otherwise pressure is fine. if that helps at all.

any other suggestions as to what could cause this?

Make sure the pickup pipe O ring and gasket are in good nick so it's not drawing in air. Also check the pressure sender as well first incase it is that that is going O/C!

Loose crankhaft pulley bolts can cause oil pressure problems - it is a friction drive only, hence the bonkers torque figure it should be tightened up to. It won't feel loose, but it isn't tight enough in other words. Cold oil will put extra load on the pump and make it more likely to slip I guess.

Regards,

Tref.

You can drop the sump enough to remove the oil pump without removing the cross member.

Check/change filter, sender, crank bolt etc before doing as its a pain in the...... to do.

Loose crank pully bolt can lead to all sorts of problems - the keyway in my old one is 4 times the width it should be and the engine vibrated a bit!
