Sumped and stumped

Nice sunny day and the 951`s in auto2000 in Kempston since Friday

(sorry Andrew, I know I said I`d get it done at your place but I`m v v busy at the mo and work in London so I thought, what could go wrong - its only a sump swap after all so I`ll go to a local Porsche indy)

As you all may recall I got a s/h sump, cleaned it, tested the float etc and handed over expecting no real problems.

I`m told apparently the exhaust cross over pipe has to come off so bolts are now snapped off (I trust that this is in the exhaust and not the block? and have to be drilled out and rethreaded and apparently oil pipe seals are now required as its leaking oil? What oil pipes? Power steering? Are there pipes that have to be removed for to change the sump?

Can anyone elaborate please?

The cross over pipe takes the exhaust from the manifold to the Turbo and likely the bolts were rusty (though on the manifold side they are nuts and bolts. They probably do have to drop crossmember/steering rack and the pipes may need disconecting, or may have been leaking anyway.

Hi all

Thanks for the almost instant replies [8D]

Dont get me wrong I am not moaning about the work being done but interested in why and what? I assumed it must be the p/s pipes.

It's one of those jobs that in theory sounds simple enough - but it ranks up there with rear wheel bearing replacement; head gasket replacement and doing the clutch - all very time consuming jobs on a 951. Don't you just love these cars? ;-)

Whats at Donnington? [&:] Edited to say (yes I know its a race track [:)])

Is your open night 13th April?

Yes I do but I need a 4 poster so I can do more myself................

Hi Andrew

Might try and make it Thursday eve as we are off to Holland in the 951 early the next day so it will need a run after the work is completed [;)]

Cant make 24th but I`ll look out for the next one.

Update............

Nick rang today to say that the sump was back on however the oil pump (which apparently seals against it at the point the sump was broken) also has a crack in it [] How the h*ll did all that happen. The engines never been out I think so its been jacked or lowered onto something I would imagine. I cant find the engine no either, where is it?

He`ll try and fix it, if not its a new pump so I also told him to change the cambelt and tensioner while about it.

I dont know what I`ll tell the wife [&:][&:] , I nearly sold it earlier this year as we are stuffing every penny into an extension at the mo and I didnt want major expenses.

Still, on the bright side it shouldnt leak (hopefully) and I have the assurance that the cam belt is renewed.

Please do NOT let it cost me any more or it is going. I reckon its going to have cost me about £1800 total spend (incl tyres and insurance) for 2400 miles FFS which is tooooo much in my book [] My Westy and Ginetta were basic but reliable, handled superbly etc etc and cost me bu**er all as I could do it all myself (and fun too)

Ho hum................

Final update,

Got the car back today from auto2000 in Kempston, Beds.

Sump swapped, power steering pipe seals, turbo return pipe seals, oil pump repaired (phew [8D]), new cam belt and tensioner, n/s rear CV joint fitted, many sump bolts and all oil pump bolts drilled and helicoiled (some gorilla had stripped/overtorqued the bolts - a disaster waiting to happen)

£350 [8D][8D]

Top service, Nick rang and updated progress, wouldnt use anything but OEM parts (hence some delays), stuck to his word, basically I`m impressed and hoping all continues well as we`re off to Holland on Friday so as I`m off tomorrow to fettle the car I`ll have to test it properly [;)]

BTW is there need for restraint/bedding in a new cambelt (apart from retentioning it after 1000 miles?)

I've never shown any restraint [:D] (or been told to do so)

Enjoy your trip - that sounds like a blummin good price for the work you had done.
