Sun roof does any drive with it open

Hi, my 997 has a sun roof, but because it make so much wind noise at any speed over 40 it is always closed. I have come from a Boxster so very much used to open air motoring. I know a sun roof is no substitute for a convertible , but its a start.

The wind noise is when open or tilted , the dealer says they all do this, my sons 996 is fine so are they taking the piss ?

ps its OK at traffic lights[:D]

Graham, didn't we do this [&:]

I have a sunroof and do enjoy it being open, like yourself having come from a cabriolet I do feel its short comings...

when open
I drive with mine open quite often, on "normal" speeds. By opening the sunroof to its second position (press the button again) it is quieter as well as being a bigger hole.
By lowering a window very slightly it stops the buffering that happens at the higher "normal "speeds, its no louder than my 996 was...

However, in comparison to a Cabriolet (I had a 996) it does create more noise... when driving at "non-normal [;)]" road speeds.. it is loud

when tilted
never really had any issues for "normal" use...

When closed
What sunroof [;)]

Hi Marlin
Like you I traded in my Boxsty S for a Carrera S and I use the sunroof regularly in the summer.
I get a 'pressure wave' effect with the sunroof open, and it gets more pronounced at speed. To cure it, I just drop one of the windows down a few mm, and it does the trick.
I find that open sunroof and open windows and a hard-pressed throttle produces a noise that soon makes me forget 'pressure waves'[:D]
Cheers
Rob

Gary - you beat me to it![;)]

yeh we did but I am still not convinced that all 911s have this problem. Guess I will have to turn the stereo up and give it some more beans [;)]

Hi Rob, I tried the dropped window, but it's not a pressure thing its more of a whistle, oh sh**e to it describing car noises on a internet forum is a no brainer. Just going to live with it. [;)]

I certainly don't get a whistle, just wind noise and the thundering at the higher speeds, which is cured by dropping a window.
Just because one dealer says this, I'd certainly take it to another OPC and ask their opinion, its all too easy to say they all do that Sir...

bit like the old, thats the first one we've ever come across, RMS Sir?, we've never heard of it before....[;)]

I've always found, with various makes, that the 'buffetting' can be stopped by adjusting the width of opening to suit the level of speed. General wind noise will always be there.

Having said that, I don't use the roof when travelling at any reasonable speed, just when stuck in traffic or tootling around.

Hi Marlin
Have a look at the front of the sunroof when open as I think there is a 'spring loaded' little flap that pops up to help with windflow. Might be that is perhaps not deploying properly and might need a little bit of silicon to lube or maybe debris not allowing it to deploy properly?
I'd also have alook at the soft trim around the edge of the sunroof to check it's not slightly loose and maybe wind getting under that somehow and causing whistle.
This is clutching at straws I know, but I can't think of much else.
Bestaluck with sorting it. Mine certainly doesn't 'whistle' at speed.
Rob
