Colin,
'Twas great to meet you and James - thanks for coming over! Chewing the 944 fat is always a good activity for a quiet day, and I throughly enjoyed it. My regret is that I don't feel we did anything much. Let's face it, we probably spent more time drinking coffee and talking than we did with spanners in our hands ... and I woossed out of actually fixing the problem with your disks! OK, the weather wasn't conducive to spending lots of time outside, hands-on, but I still feel slightly as if I dragged you across town for little avail.
So ... apologies. Maybe more spanner-action next time.
That aside, really good to meet you. LIL (not to be confused with Mr Smith's waggon!) is a fine old girl, and seems to run very well. The list of niggles is nothing more than you would expect from a car of that age, and I am sure will be more of a pleasure than a chore to fix! Look after her, and she will look after you. And - yes, James was right - you need to get her on a track sometime!
Thanks for the photos. You can't see the blown sidelight bulb on the nearside of mine - very nicely composed!
James. Equally, excellent to meet you. Thanks for the hand with the bulb. Very instructive to drive your S2 back-to-back with mine; thanks. Yours felt much smarter than mine - the interior was tidier, and the seats were a LOT better. I covet those ... I need to find some sports seats for mine. The interesting thing was the road feel. Yours felt more responsive in terms of steering feel, but slightly more wayward - it felt as if you needed to keep it on line all the time, slightly. I suspect you were quite right in that the wishbone ball-joints gave it the directness and immediacy (which was very nice.) And possibly the mild waywardness is down to shocks or alignment. If you do go the Koni route and want a hand fitting them, let me know ... it's not a difficult job.
Ian - sorry to have been such a poor host. Stay around for lunch next time! Hope you and Susie got back in time for Mr Chair.
Another one, when the weather has improved? Good idea!
Oli.
