Sunday S2 blast and update

Hi All,

I havent posted for a while. Hope everyones well and enjoying their cars. I am 5mths into 944 ownership and am really enjoying it. I do wish i had done it a long time ago.

I took my S2 for a quick blat up the M11 today from east London to near Stansted airport. Not a bad cruise of about 60 miles (and quickly out of London traffic congestion) ...though I need to find some more tasty A&B roads to really put it through its paces. I ended up in a convoy with a Cayman S and Boxster S. The Boxster sounded extremely nice (I am thinking PSE), have to admit that note coming out of the back of my S2 would top it off...

I gave it a quick tub on my return and tried out the Raceglaze Carnauba Detailing Spray (used for topping up prior waxing). Great stuff and very quick to apply and buff off. Anything to stop the paint going pink! [;)]

The only thing I am noticing at the moment is that the car really seems a magnet for stone chips. What is everyone else doing about them? I touch in the major ones every mth or so but its a losing battle. What does it cost to just have the front end re-painted every few years?

In terms of the 2010 plans for the car. Well this is a list to date:

1. New steering wheel - personally prefer the RS style so grabbed one of 911 Designs numbers. Really really good quality and was pleasantly surprised when it turned up. I will keep the old one just in case i dont like it (or want to go back to original

2. Upgrade the lighting. I picked up a set of Philips extreme bulbs. I hope that improves the current situation as the stock bulbs are...lets face it....1990 technology.....or I have really bad eye sight and I dont think its the latter

3. Wheel Refurb - I am going to get Lepsoms to sort this in a few mths. Mine arent bad but could definitely do with a freshen up

4. Attend to some corrosion on the right front wing. Its not bad...but I dont want it to get terminal so will get that sorted around mid year some time.

I plan to keep the car pretty much standard. Keep it as it was intended. Though all the chat about KW suspension, chips etc is always extremely tempting [;)]

I really liked the article in the latest Porsche Post on the Guards Red 944 S2. I thought it looked great next to the Lambo Gallardo Spyder and the trip through Europe sounded amazing. I may do something like that myself this year (though with no air cond I may have to time it right). I am going to drive up to the Lakes District and Yorkshire Dales around Easter and put the car through its paces. Cant wait for that.

I hope to get out and catch up with the front runners a few times this year.

Cant help some shameless self promotion of the steed......[8D]

Glad you're enjoying the car m8ee and it is looking good from the photos. Shame you didnt pop round for a cuppa though being as I live on one of those 'Tasty B Roads' near Stanstead , did you come down the A120 towards the A10 ? I did have one 944 owner visit today but he came in a Citroen
( you know who you are [8D] )

Enjoy

Hi Mas - mate next time I will drop in. Have to admit I enjoyed reading your posts on the cars you went to view when looking for your current turbo. Amusing stuff to say the least!

So you have decided not to sell and keep the beast? Surely some tasty mods are on the cards. If i had a turbo I think i would go bankrupt!

Hi Andrew,

Glad you are still loving the car and that the romance hasn't died as yet [:D]. Also good to hear that the car is running well. Stone chips are a real pain, mines got more than its fair share at the moment. I did consider getting a bfront end respray but then I reckon I would get paranoid about driving her in case the paint got chipped straightaway again. I have toyed with getting them done by one of those "chipsaway" types but it does seem that the quality of the individual franchises varies quite a lot. Might take the plunge though and see how it turns out (once MAF and bigger injectors are installed - have to get ones priorities right ! [:D])

hiya andrew, car looks great and anytime your going for a sat/sun blast down the m11, please let me know as i am based in wanstead so near to the m11 and would join you all the best and i would look at around ÂŁ300 to ÂŁ400 for the bonnet and front spoiler, my bonnet cost ÂŁ200 summer last year but body shops seem to vary in prices, all the best jason p

Glad your enjoying the car, it looks great. I am just about to get the rusty front wing bottoms replaced with new metal and thought I would have a front end respray at the same time. Looking at about 1K which to me doesnt seem bad considering I'll have new looking wings and half the car is being reprayed (whole front end and doors blended). I'm also probably going to get some of that clear paint protection film installed on the front to reduce stone chip damage, its expensive stuff but I plan on using the car alot this year (driving 2500m through Europe) so think its worthwhile.

Jon - If you do go the chipsaway route let me know how it goes. I have read that they can be hit or miss. I will touch them in for now. How is the new suspension going? Not tempted to drop an LS1 or 2 in it?? [;)]

Jason - Next time I am heading out I will let you know. There is a guy in my complex with a nice 3.2ltr carerra who is keen to get out as well. Can you send me some more details on who did the work on your bonnet.

Edd - Who are you using for your work? Is it the guys you have mentioned before up near Herfordshire? Your Euro trip sounds good.

Andrew,

Glad, as everyone else is, to hear that S2 ownership is treating you well. If you do another weekend blast then drop me a line too - I'm less than a couple of miles away and also enjoy such a jolly! And then we can ALL drop in on Mas for a cuppa! [:)]

A trip ooop norf is a must. You need to do it. I took my S2 'round Scotland a couple of years ago (written up on here and mentioned often since), and it's the best driving I have ever done, bar none. Open, perfectly-surfaced roads, exquisite scenery and no other traffic in sight - it needs to be done, and a 944 is the ideal machine for such roads. Do it, and then do it again. You won't regret it.

Stonechips. I hold a slightly controversial viewpoint, and that is to live with them. See them as war wounds, and speed trophies. You don't own a garage queen, you own a car that was engineered to be driven, and driven fast. So, drive it as the maker intended and wear the ensuing blemishes with pride. Touch them in to prevent rust - sure, but don't get too previous about it otherwise you'll just end up with an ornament - and while 944's are pretty cars, they drive MUCH better than they look ...

I have used Chipsaway, a certain gentlemen who is on the forum owns a franchise up here in Northampton, he is a well known fastidious 944 owner and did a great job on my S2... worth a converstaion if your chips are bothering you!

A cuppa at mine on a Saturday or Sunday Morn is a good idea ( sociable and free) [:D] , or theres the Silver Ball Cafe up the A10 , it has been a meeting point for bikers and drivers since b4 I was born and I still occasionally punt up there on Sunday morning. I intend to go to the PCGB Essex monthly meet too so Im hopeful that one or two 944 folk from here go to that one.

As for the tales of my car hunting , I'm glad someone read them I try to make posts interesting if poss [;)]

Cheers

Ooooh, now that's something I'm thinking about in the next few weeks as well, and if it's good then I'll join up and make it a regular thing. (I think that the gentlemans agreement is that you can do one regional meet as a non-member ... )

Doesn't John Sims run that one? And which day of the week is it on? Tuesdays, I think, but can't remember which one.

Oli, its tomorrow at 8pm at the venue shown on the website. I will be going unless the snow gets worse
( quite heavy today near us) and it would be nice to know if you are as well. First timers are most definately welcome I'm sure ! TBH I wasnt even aware that second or 3rd timers weren't [8D]

Hopefully I can tempt some other forumites to go !

Regards

Mas

Mas,

Alas - I'll be busy tomorrow. Sorry. Hope you have a top evening tho'. (Snow? None of that in East London at the mo >LooksOutOfTheCanaryWharfWindowToSeeNoSnow<.

What's the deal on calculating the day? Second Tuesday of the month or something? If so, I'll write Tuesday 9th in the diary ....

Mr Sims attends on occasion but no he doesn't run it. Its actually run by the PCGB Chairman no less though ably assisted by Greg too. I used to go quite regularly but must confess I have lapsed in the last 12 months or so. If there is to be a renewed influx of 944 types going then I may well give it another go again. [:)]

Always tempted though my bank manager may have something to say about it so am contenting myself with getting a Vitesse MAF and bigger injectors fitted for now. The KW suspension is excellent imho, very glad I got it.

Gday Oli (ps: its snowing!!)

Pt taken. Definitely doing the Lakes District etc. I remember doing a driving tour in Scotland a few yrs ago (prior to 944 ownership) and its wasnt so much fun in a Ford Mondeo estate diesel!!

I am away for a few weeks on holiday (sunny Sydney then New York) so will hit the London based guys around mid April for a drive (hopefully fast and on some nice roads)

... it says that it is the second Tuesday of the month, so Tuesday 9th March is in the diary.

Mas? Jon? You both in?

I think I'll start a thread about it!
