Sunroof Question and 944 Ramblings . . .

Hi - two weeks into 944 ownership . . .

Haven't had the courage to remove the roof yet - sunroof motors work and it tilts open. Handbook says " . . . press rear of tumbler switch (a) until the actuators release the roof . . . .Undo front hinges . . . Lift and remove roof." All OK to the "Lift and Remove" bit, but roof seems reluctant to budge and I am reluctant to use brute force. Am I missing something or could there be a fault?

Anyway, apart from that EVERYTHING works - it's a 1987 Crimson Red Lux. Not my dream car (I really wanted a white or dark metallic S2 with full leather) but couldn't turn it down - full Porsche service history, 37 stamps in the book, all the old MoTs, 3" pile of receipts, original side decals still in sealed packets, recent cam belt, etc.

So intending to run for a year to get me up the learning curve, then try for an S2 or Turbo!

Hi
Key in the ignition, ignition either off or in position 1 - engine off - switch will work to retract lifting bars. Panel can then be lifted free at the rear edge, undo the front locks to carefully remove from outside - a helper on t'other side means you neither scratch the paint-work nor put your back out... relocating is slightly fiddly but once you've done it once it's plain sailing. Once in place switch opposite direction to re-lock the roof.
To tilt use normally with the engine running - Clarke's Garage (http://www.clarks-garage.com/) has articles on setting it up if needs be.

HTH

Cheers

You will love it,when you take it out the first time you realise how massive the sunroof is,angle the black lip thing to extend/fold upwards it stops wind buffeting with the roof off,it is practically a targa roof![:)]Nice sunny spring day heating on driving in the countryside, lovely!

I firmly agree with everything Mark said, apart from that you can also remove it on freezing cold winter days with a hat, scarf and gloves, and the heating on full blast.

The speeds well in excess of a lepton that I managed on Saturday (on a private road, ossifer) were all the more exhilarating because the roof was out and the windows open (and 'Slippery when Wet' very loud on the CD player - damn but I'd forgotten how good that album was/is!)

ive never been able to do this as described are u meant to extend the sunroof first then do the ignition to off then on bit? i always have to pull the arms out a bit to detatch.

I think that clarks garage covers it, but start with the sunroof closed, and the ignition off (car parked, essentially.) Turn the ignition to position 1 (often missed as the detent is quite light) and press the sunroof switch in the "close" direction. (Yes, "close", even though the roof is closed.)

The legs will wind themselves back in and the back of the sunroof can then be lifted all the way up.

When done, you replace the sunroof and press the button in the "open" direction. The legs will reappear and lock themselves back into the back of the roof. (Or you can just lock the car - the sunroof mechanism is linked to the central locking mechanism and the roof legs will re-attach if the roof is in and they are not already attached.)
