Sunroof wind deflector

Chaps,

My S2 has (as have all other 944's I believe) a wind deflector strip at the front of the sunroof. I can understand the point of it - to modify the flow of air over the front of the sunroof aperture when the roof itself is removed.

It seems that for a given speed, there is an 'ideal position' for this flap; too high and it is noisy in the car, too low and it drums. This 'ideal position' changes with the speed (I think that higher speeds necessitate lower angles). However, it is made of a plastic not unlike that of washing-up-bowls and cannot be made to stay in one position - it moves around a bit in the wind it is deflecting. It is easy enough to reach up and move it to a better position, but having managed a long and fast run recently (I banked - correctly - on the notion that all the local plod would have been engaged with the royal nuptials and flexed my right foot satisfyingly far into three figures) with the sunroof out, it became tiresome to keep on doing this.

Is this normal? Is there any solution? Or should I just put up with drumming/noise/constant adjustment, or lower my speed?

in my experience it works best sticking up vertically, but the novelty of the sunroof wore off a while ago and its usually just open at a tilt these days

I've found the same, at motorway speeds its better up IIRC and the rest of the time down. I left it up, stopped the drumming noise as you say. But exactly as Pastry said, the novelty wore off and I just open it a tilt, especially as its electric [:D]

OK, thanks chaps.

Completely normal Oli stop whinging and get on with it [:D]
Blunt, direct, and to the point ... once again I remember why I like you so much Rob! Thanks! [;)]

Oli.

(People are seeing the removing roof as a 'novelty'? [] It's one of the best features of the car in my book; I remove it whenever I can! Bitterly cold day, hat, scarf and gloves, heater on full blast and the roof out - bliss! [:)])

I specifically bought a non sunroof car having tried ones with sunroofs.

Useless and pointless when open and not a pleasant experience came to mind in my very personal opinion and was obviously simply an item of equipment of that era and not thought out very well.

Crumbs. I am genuinely surprised. Each to their own and all that, but I love the sunroof.

Glad you found a non-sunroof car! (Means there are more sun-roofed ones for oddballs like me to enjoy, eh! [;)])

I have to disagree I like Oli love getting the roof off in the summer. It is that large it practically makes it a ragtop. Yeah it is a PITA to keep adjusting the deflector but hey the car is 23 years old. I also find that there is one position for front seat comfort and another for back seat comfort i.e my kids. If they are in the car I have to adjust it for their comfort making the ride up front a little blustery. Good job I love them so much. See Oli I do have a heart after all [:D]

I too love the sunroof out, yes it can be noisy at motorway speeds (or above Oli[:D]) but on sweeping a and twisty b roads i find it perfect.

Dont mean to sound so dismissive but I tested around 14 944T`s before plumping for mine many owners tried to sell me the sunroof aspect and opened them up and all I found was that when the roofs are out they are noisy with drumming and buffeting all the time and therefore annoying and not fun on a long run in my book (and I`ve owned and build soft tops so I know what flies in yer teeth are so didnt expect that experience from Porsche)

I love a car with a sunroof but I have to admit the couple of times I have taken them out is when problems have occured with microswitches and cogs etc. OT but most new cars seem to come with either AC or a sunroof which for me is a shame.

I like the airflow of the roof tilted and the passenger window open - need to sort mine out as one arm doesn't fit properly so the whole thing rattles. Just one more little thing to do!

As I am fortunate to have a soft top too if I want the full experience I use that!

I just wish mine worked!! [&:]

Not even the usual cogs failing thats stopping it, the connector that holds the motor to the cable tube broke and I need to fabricate somethintg to hold them together!

Bear in mind the 924/944 sunroof design is 30+ years old, in a day when no car with a sunroof had a deflector unless you bought a bolt on external one. Crack a side window open slightly and the drumming abates, but will always be noisy.

My 2010 BMW panoramic roof has a two stage roof opening and a two stage deflector. Under 100mph the deflector is at full height, over 100mph it drops fully to decrease wind noise.

drove back from dollar today with the roof off and the deflector up and it was ok at legal speeds, bit noisy 60+ but no drumming. downside was that a bird managed to shit through the roof [] luckily didnt hit anyone.

IIRC mine does pretty much stay where you put it, have wondered occasionally about a little programmable servo motor to control it, but there probably isn't space, given that it would have to fit inside the roof when closed.
