Sunroof woes S2

Hi Guys

My 89 S2 sunroof mechanisim is playing up, the nylon drive wheels are stripped, well one is totally the other is partial.

The drive cable had tried to remove itself. I think there is a micro switch of some sort that limits the movement of the cable and this has failed meaning when the roof shuts the cable keeps moving and strips the nylon gear!

Has anyone come across this issue and what was their fix?

Can the gears be bought individually or are they part of a kit?

Any help appreciated

Stephen

New gears are about £4 from porscheshop mate. It's a pretty easy job to do. Hardest part is setting the correct height for the sunroof so it is fully shut when the motor stops driving. There is a guide for both sunroof types in the garage shop manual section at www.clarks-garage.com I completely refurbed mine failry easy job compared to some. Give me a shout if you need a hand or get into trouble. Make sure you have a connecting piece between the motor and the tube that houses the cable. Otherwise the cable does what it fancies and snags up. Mine was missing so I had to make something.

Thanks for the useful info, where is the micro switch located? I read a post indicating it was in the roof but did not see any wires there, there was a switch down by the motor that looked like it might be!

There are three sets of switches mate. Two in the motor mechanism to control forward and reverse drive easily seen when you get it apart. Or wait there could be three in there I forget [&:] The third is in the centre of the sunroof opening at the front. It detects that the sunroof is actually fitted. There is a triangular shaped spiggot in the front of the sunroof that activates it.

Slight thread hijack (sorry!)

my sunroof worke fine for my first 3 days of car ownership although I only used it once so am not 100% sure exactly how it I supposed to work. But now it doesn't rise up on demand but does sort of unlock so I can still remove the sunroof and if I refit the roof and press the 'down' button it locks in place. The litle plastic arms aren't coming up ou of the roof though, lifting the sunroof.

Do I need to take the whole damn thing apart? I am guessing it will be either or both of broken cable / stripped gears although the fact there is enough movement in the mechanism to lock the roof in place implies to me that something is working at least.

SUSIT,

It sounds very like the clutch that controls the sunroof (in the boot) is too tight and has caused things to both slip and break. Loosen it off before you do any repair work; if you don't, the moment you operate it with new cogs in, it will strip those too. (Ask me how I know .. actually, don't ... [] )

The clutch should be just tight enough to move the mechanism, and no tighter. For some reason, it seems to get tighter in hot weather; when mine failed it was on the hottest day of the year, and the car had spent the day sitting in the sun, and I have heard a number of other similar tales.

Good instructions on a sunroof mechanism overhaul on Clarks Garage.

Oli.
