Sunroof won’t retract to remove ????

Hi all
my car is a late 1985 model and I can open the sunroof but the arm won’t retract for me to remove completely.
I want to do this as I have a small drip in the car when it rains so was going to see if the ducts need clearing.
After looking on the net most sunroofs have plastic gears that strip over time but after removing the roof mine is not like that as it has the cable going directly across the arms without the gears.
I guess the upside is no gears can brake but how can I get to the root of the problem.
In the boot I see the roof mechanism but not sure if it’s as easy as one of the relays (I think that’s what they are) could be defective or can I retract the arms manually.
any help would be great, cheers guys.
