Supercharger on the track?

Hi all,

I have a '95 993 C2 which I use mainly for track days. It has been upgraded with PSS9's RS sway bars, strut brace and Michelin Cup sports. I have also just bought TT big reds for the front and am awaiting a set of RS big red calipers for the rear.

It has done 73K miles and runs really well on the track, but as allways I yearn for more, especially to deal with the GT3's

So I have also just bought a TPC supercharger kit which is in a box in my garage awaiting fitment (winter project)

Boy is that slope slippery!!!!!

My question is will I blow up the engine if i use it on the track? What about the gearbox and differential, drive train etc will it take the strain?

Should I put on an extra oil cooler?

What should I do to minimise the potential risk of overstressing the car given track use?

At the moment I don't plan an intercooler.

TIA

John S.

P.S. Anyone got a spare oil cooler they want to sell? (I don't have air con so have a handy space in the left hand wing!

Well, I can only give comments related to my supercharged 3.2 carrera, which may, or may not, be relevant.
Mine uses a Paxton SN92 unit.

I believe that my standard G50 gearbox/clutch were designed for the 930, so were built for 300bhp + (mine produces approx. 320).

My setup did not come with an intercooler originally, but was modified to include one.
I had a fan fitted to my front wing oil cooler, just in case (more relevant sitting in traffic jams on a hot day - normal driving doesn't seem to produce any higher temperatures than normal). Not quite track days, but normal 100 mph + driving (France) shows no temp. increase after a few hours. Mind you, the s/charger starts to really blow at 80mph, in 5th gear, so it isn't really doing that much at this speed.

My engine has showed no sign of the strain, and has done approx. 70,000 miles with the s/charger fitted. It has the odd oil leak, but, at 120,000 miles on the clock, what would you expect.

Big advantage is not having to thrash the engine to get serious go - yet again, not quite track use.

John, I don't know about slippery slope....it is more like madness!
The lengths some people will go to to get past a 993RS [;)]

Sounds like a fantastic project and look forward to seeing you disappear into the distance on a track day soon.
try colin belton (ninemesiter) www.9mracing.com for sadvice, he has done a few S/C conversions with details on the site.

all the best
Paul.

Maurice,

Thanks for the suggestions; in order of importance it looks like I will need:

Mortgage extension
Additional oil cooler
Intercooler
Dustpan and brush for track days to clear up the mess at Avon Rise as the driveshafts, gearbox and rear diff all let go in a big way!
A 993TT to do it properly.

I will go for the oil cooler and think about the intercooler - but I want to keep the look stock - maximum effect on the 993RS's - paul!!

I will contact Colin for his thoughts, i still have to get someone to install It.

Thanks and will keep you all posted

John

You should see it at PCGB track days next year - At least the first..................

Hi Jim

Did you get the TPC supercharger kit from America - if so, if you don't mind me asking what other costs did you have to pay - ie import duties etc etc

I have 993 engined 911 SC and at some point in the future would like to supercharge it, hence my interest.

Thanks!!!

Hi richard,

I bought the kit from a club member via ebay, it was unused and he bought in Jan this year. I got it for ~25% discount to list. The member bought it from the US (~£3,600) but was hit by customs duty when it came in which I understand pretty much brings it up to the ninemeister price - no such thing as a free lunch unforunately!

The price incl of VAT is about £5300, plus £800 fitting (@ ninemeister) plus it is recommended that you get new plugs, leads, distributor caps, rotor arms.

I am going to get it fitted over the winter will let you all know how it goes

John

Hi John

Thanks for your reply!

Talking of ebay I have recently seen a couple of Eaton M90 superchargers which were apparently brand new - I think this supercharger is the one that is used on the TPC kit. They sold for about £250 each - a bit cheaper than the £1400 that I found out was the RRP for one!!

I wonder if it is possible to buy the TPC kit without the supercharger - I bet it isn't....

Richard

Slightly off the topic of superchargers, but how did you find the PSS9 kit. I am considering this for my 996TT, but am unsure whether it will give me any real advantage over the standard Turbo suspension set-up

Gary,

the PSS9's are fantastic, as different from the old set up as night is from day, however, i also have RS roll bars and a front strut brace fitted at the same time so am commenting on the combination. I use my car a lot for track days and it is really flat through the corners and a number of instructors have commented on how well set up it is (fitting and set up by Tognola). I would strongly recommend it, but my standard set up had done 65,000 miles so was well bushed. I can't comment on the 996 TT but I can keep up with my friends 996 4S through the twisty bits at castle combe which is a big vote for the bilsteins.

Peter,

The blower is only a small part of the story, you would also need:

Inlet manifold
Extra injector and electronic control box
Pulleys
Replacement piping for the heater
Brackets
Other piping and castings
In short a heap of bits I wouldn't even consider trying to make on my own, you are welcome to look at all the bits of the kit before they go on if you want - i am in Glos

John

Thanks for the offer John - the TPC website is actually pretty good as it has photos of all the parts - I'll be really interested to see how you get on with respect to fitting it - will you be fitting it yourself or getting 9M to do it?

Hi John

I found this website that has a 993 powered SC with TPC supercharger - there are only pictures of the final conversion but worthwhile viewing nonetheless
